    The Fall of Castle Zagyg?

I like that imagine. I might like it even more if it were pared down even more.

Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e; 4e upgrade or new game??

I’m sorry. I was trying to phrase things in general, not specific, terms. Read “X” as “Any game, edition X” and read “2nd edition” as “edition X + 1”. Being as it is a generalization, there will be many flaws whenever you fill in those blanks with specifics. That’s the nature of...

I just played my first Rules Cyclopedia based game

Yeah. ’Cause we aficionados of the older games just hate being invited to talk about them. (^_^) No need for an apology...unless you stop asking questions. (^_^)

    Disappointed in 4e

Yes. I honestly think the number of people who would be happy to have only the heroic tier rules would outnumber the people who would continue into the paragon tier. I believe the number of people who play into the paragon tier outnumber the people who would play into the epic tier. For me, the...

    Disappointed in 4e

Yeah. I think this would’ve been a much better idea. It’ll be interesting to see. Of course, it is only natural for the core to sell better. But it isn’t due to perception, it’s due to the fact that people are either going to buy core only or core + supplement. Very few are going to buy only...

How does a game work without skills?

    Good mechanics! Yet...I don’t know...they feel—to me—more like treating the symptom.

Who got Psionics in my Dnd?

<shrug> D&D’s spell slots is just a fancy spell-point system.

    I'm going to run a 1e game

Yeah. There’s some value in figuring out what’s written, but just do whatever you want. (^_^) My understanding is that this bit was there to further discourage “slumming”. High level PCs hanging out on the first few levels of the dungeon just to rack up XP with little risk. What you do is...

I just played my first Rules Cyclopedia based game

Since you’re using the RC, I’d also advise keeping the optional rules turned off for a while. Get comfortable with the basics of the system first. Know what it is like without an optional rule before you add it. I think B2 and the other B modules are great inspiration. Personally, I think...

How does a game work without skills?

Something I observed. Over my years of RPGing, it seemed that PCs tended to fail at things more and more often. It felt like my PCs were becoming less and less competent. Then I started to notice the number of times when GMing that I’d call for a roll and—once it failed—realized that I probably...

    The Fall of Castle Zagyg?

Exactly. The thing was, I realized that when running C&C, I could put C&C back on the shelf, leave the Basic rulebooklet, Expert rulebooklet, and 1e DMG on the table, and be even closer to the way I like best with one fewer book on the table. (^_^) As for Gygax Games: I’m reserving judgement...

How does a game work without skills?

Personally, I like to talk through rulings I’m less confident on with the group. I was skeptical about fully freeform, but I’ve been surprised at how well it actually works in practice. These days, I tend to see freeform as the ideal and the fact that I still cling to rules systems as a...

Would you like to see commemorative editions of the core rules of all older editions?

Yeah. I mean, you might as well suggest that they license a company to print tiny miniature reprints of all the AD&D books and some of the boxed sets... Oh, wait. That actually happened, didn’t it? (^_^)

    What Edition Do You Play?

I have no idea how to vote. Currently playing? None. (i.e. Marvel Super Heroes) Next D&D edition I plan to run? The c. 1981 Basic + Expert, which is post-1e. Next D&D edition I expect to play? 3.5. (Separate options for 3.0 & 3.5 in this poll seems odd to me.) I’m unsure whether my group...

Who got Psionics in my Dnd?

As I recall, “science-fiction” and “fantasy” weren’t so distinct at the time. And Gygax always seems to lean more towards the middle anyway. Oerth was a sphere. I suspect he thought of it being in a planetary system rather than at the center of crystalline spheres. Even his forays into...

Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e; 4e upgrade or new game??

Right. Bob creates X the RPG. X does everything Bob wanted it to do. Bob gets forced out, laid off, retires, &c. Tom (another game designer at the company) feels X should do different things. Maybe he didn’t understand what Bob wanted it to do. Maybe Bob didn’t communicate his intentions well...

    Re-Reading 1e

If the creators of these monsters knew up-front that their creations would appear in an actual AD&D book published by TSR... Better? Worse? I dunno, but I bet it would’ve been different.

Was Reading My Mentzer Expert Rules and What did I see?

I can’t tell you how it feels to you. I can’t tell you what your personal definition of “D&D” is. I can only give you my point-of-view.

    The Ideal RPG System?

I’ve long been on a quest to find/develop my ideal system. I’ve come to realize that it won’t ever exist. If for no other reason than that I enjoy subsystems that are incompatible or redundant. Not everything I enjoy can fit into a single system. Unfortunately, the quest has become such a...

[OD&D] Mythic Asian Fantasy in Two Easy Steps!

After a friend of mine read GURPS China, he said ancient China was a generic fantasy world. After trying to build a Chinese-inspired campaign using the 3e OA, I came to a similar conclusion. To make a Chinese-style D&D game, all you really need is to change the names of things in the core rules.
