The Editions Need a Better Nomenclature

The problem—or a problem—is that when you need a term, you need one that fits the specific context. Sometimes I want to talk about the c. 1980 Cook/Marsh-edited Expert Set. Sometimes I want to talk about all editions prior to the year 2000. Sometimes I want to talk about... Terminology driven...

    Re-Reading 1e

You know, I’m not sure we ever actually used magic resistance in my AD&D days.

Was Reading My Mentzer Expert Rules and What did I see?

If I concede the thematic similarities, does that mean that I cannot feel that the mechanical changes are enough to make it “not D&D” to me?

Presidential Election Politics and What Turned Me Off From 4e

Choosing not to play 4e without trying it isn’t a bad thing. Just as—if you weren’t going to vote—you wouldn’t need to learn about the issues or the candidates. If one of the people in your group wanted to run 4e, and you refused without giving it a try. Well...then I’d start to say that your...

The Best D&D edition for me.

Another page of mine that could probably use some updating: Robert’s illustrated quick-reference to the editions of D&D and what I tend to call them When looking at that chart, technically “Basic” would refer to Holmes and the B in B/X or BECMI. Often, however, it is used as a synonym for what...

Forked Thread: The Best D&D edition for me.

One player in my group usually keeps copious notes on the session. If she has her laptop, she’ll use it. It is not a distraction for her. We’ve used iPhone dice apps. I’ve used my iPhone to reference PDF or online rules. Phones really haven’t been a distraction. When we gamed here at my place...

Got the D&D 4e Starter Set...So whatcha wanna know?

This is interesting to me because in 28 years of gaming, this has never been my experience. There has never been a single or even primary DM in my groups. At least half the group regularly takes a turn at it. New players are recruited by everyone, and I’d say those players who seldom DM tend to...

Curious about something: would you play in an AD&D campaign?

I don’t think I’ll ever understand turning down a game because of the system. If I enjoy a GM, I figure I’m going to enjoy the game more if he’s using the system he wants to use. Even if it isn’t my first choice. FWIW, I’ve never actually seen weapon v. armor, alignment languages, or psionics...

Oh, right. I completely agree with you about that.

Got the D&D 4e Starter Set...So whatcha wanna know?

Despite having total access to TV with—what—a dozen cartoon and kids channels, a Playstation 2, and a computer, my kids can get just as excited about board games; marbles; construction paper, crayons, and scissors; reading; &c. As popular as it once was? No, probably not. But. Marbles hasn’t...

Got the D&D 4e Starter Set...So whatcha wanna know?

Why is it a bad thing to give someone a relatively complete game for their money? Would it really compete with the “main product”? If this were so, why didn’t the basic sets that most of us ENWorlders started with keep us from buying AD&D books? Wouldn’t it more (1) earn Wizards the money of...

Got the D&D 4e Starter Set...So whatcha wanna know?

Is it not possible to simplify it to the level of the old Basic Sets? Making some of the choices pre-set or otherwise simplified? It seems to me that expecting people to make the jump from pregens directly to the full PHB—if chargen really is that much of an obstacle—is just as foolish.

    Ability Scores and game playability.

    Ability Scores and game playability.

At one time I thought the absolute minimum was ten. (^_^) Since, I’ve played around with having none. I think you can go 100% skill-based just fine. I suppose Risus could be cited as an example of such. GURPS had four, which I felt was too few—for GURPS. Of course, 4/e recognized that ST and...

Right? I was also amused at the creative edition numbering they used in order to sync with their editions.

    OD&D Clones

...“whole”...must...not...comment... (^_^) They wanted to publish CZ. Gygax wanted it to use a system very similar to AD&D but didn’t want to actually use AD&D. Besides, they felt using AD&D would be more of a legal risk than they were willing to take. OSRIC didn’t exist yet. (Indeed, C&C...

Do you know you're a bad GM?

Considering all my weaknesses that I know about, it’s a little scary to think there might be any I don’t know about. They still allow me to take the chair behind the screen for long periods of time, and I’ve been asked to take it a few times. So, I figure I can’t be too bad. I’m going to keep...
