    The "orc baby" paladin problem

This reminds me of the Blackadder Christmas Carol: [Christmas morning. Ebenezer wakes up.] Baldrick: [from outside the room] Mr Blackadder! [enters, holding a sock] Looks like Father Christmas just forgot about me this year. Blackadder: [stands] Oh, dear me... [takes sock, and begins...

How do you rule on quarter-races?

I decided that for Grymwurld™ there is no statistical benefit of being 1/8 of any race. I kept the quarter-race idea because the term 'quartered' is a staple of the European Mediæval mindset, and I don't just mean 'drawn & quartered'…! Also, I like the sound of quarter-elf, kind of like...

How do you rule on quarter-races?

In Grymwurld™, I treat quarter-elves as d20 half-elves. Half-elves are treated as d20 elves and Elves are treated as Half-Celestial/Elves except of course for the Drow which are Half-Fiend/Drow.

    Realistic Combat

My assistant martial arts instructor once said “nobody wins a knife fight.”

    Realistic Combat

Going back to your original post, the two fencers in question are able to fight on despite being impared. And this is where critical hits with multipliers come in. Well, we can certainly discuss armour as DR (which I use IMC). Sorry but I cannot agree with this. Just because a character is...

Skills, Feats, & Sanity Wizard (long)

Thank you very much Arkhandus for your in-depth and constructive criticisms, some of which were thought provoking. This is precisely why I post at ENworld! I have corrected all the typos and added some clarifications. Do let me know if you have any other comments.

    What do Centaurs eat?

Their diet is probably very similar to that of the Central Asian Steppe Nomads, i.e. goat and goat milk products with whatever tubers and wild vegetables that can be found.

    Realistic Combat

I wouldn't call them edge cases. I would argue that the fencers in question were high level fighters. My experience in the martial arts and the SCA is that highly experienced fighters can sustain a lot more punnishment than novice ones. Those same "high level fighters" have more determination to...

Skills, Feats, & Sanity Wizard (long)

Aside from changing spell level access from class features to feats (with skill prereqs), what else would make it closer to a full blown skills-n-feats conversion?

Why Do You Play Roleplaying Games

QFT. This is the only reason why I play RPGs anymore. If the tabletop game is going to be the same as a computer "rpg" than I'd rather play the computer game whether online, offline, or in LAN parties.

Help with low magic S&S homebrew

How about the Conan RPG? Can't get more Swords & Sorcery than that!

    What ruins a campaign?

My first campaign ended due to player attrition due to RL. My second campaign ended because all the characters were 20+ level and it just wasn't challening. My third campaign (children of the 2nd) ended because of DM burnout. My fourth campaign ended because of some players moving away and my...

What do you do for... Feats?

Item Creation feats require skill ranks in the appropriate crafting skill. The spellcaster can no longer buy a masterwork item and make a magic item out of it, they must craft it themselves. This is a flavour ruling. Grymwurld™ uses much of the flavour of the Western Europen mythos...

What do you do for... Feats?

Sean K. Reynolds at one time posted a house rule of his on his website (although I can't find it now) that the core metamagic feats (in the PHB and the SRD) should be bonus feats for all spellcasters. His reasoning is that each of those feats have a cost per use in terms of the metamagicked...

What do you do for... Feats?

I've opened up the weapon focus tree to all characters by replacing the Fighter level prereq with the appropriate BAB. My logic is that there are so many martial feats out there that the weapon focus tree is not as attractive as it used to be. In addition, most players of fighters I know don't...

What do you do for... Feats?

I've modified a number of the martial feats to include a BAB as a prerequisite. My logic is that all martial feats require at least a BAB +1. Those which have prerequisite feats will have a BAB +2, +3, or however many prereq feats there are. Also, whenever there is a feat that a Ranger can have...

What do you do for... Feats?

I've modified the Character Progression table so that characters receive either a bonus feat or a stat increase every level. However, I also adapted the Character Progression table in the Conan RPG which grants a total of +9 to stats. Whereas Conan grants a total of +4 to all stats in addition...

Skills, Feats, & Sanity Wizard (long)

Below is my skills, feats, & sanity wizard which I call the Magus. My attempt is to present a scholarly magician with a Mediæval flavour, albeit with sanity as the price to pay rather than one’s soul. In addition I believe that scholars would have lots of skill points to invest and that they...

    New Option for Paladins

I've been using a basic skills & feats systems for Wizards and I learned it is paramount to up the skill requirements. For example, a class feature of a 4th level paladin should require 7 ranks of the pertinent skill (which is nothing more than max skill ranks). Furthermore if you're granting...
