More damaging bows and crossbows unbalanced?

Rather than increasing the damage, how about the critical multiplier? Change it from X2 to X4 and leave the base damage and critical threat range alone. This allows you to simulate the hero hit by several arrows and still able to fight on until the one arrow or bolt through the heart. Also...

    A different approach to katanas

FWIW I don't agree with this definition. My thinking is that critical threat range is determined by how easy or how difficult it is to maneouvre the weapon past your opponent's defence and strike at the vulnerable areas. A rapier is better than a mace at doing this sort of thing. Two-handed...

    A different approach to katanas

Use scimitar & falchion Actually D&D already has the scimitar and the “falchion” which are one-handed and two-handed curved swords respectively. Just treat the katana as a masterwork scimitar or falchion depending on how it is wielded. No need for making it exotic since neither the scimitar...

The Aristocrat - Based off WotC Noble

I like this Aristocrat/Noble. And I completely agree with Arkhandus that Aristocrats who are martially inclined will multiclass with fighter or knight. I think it will help your design if you visualize queens, princesses, duchesses, countesses, etc. How did being a high level Aristocrat help...

    What's up with Scottish Dwarves?!?

I share that sentiment. In my homebrew Grymwurld™ Dwarves are bankers, armourers, smiths, and jewelers. They have last names like Goldsmith, Goldstein, and Goldman.

    What's up with Scottish Dwarves?!?

I don't have the OED handy but here is a quote from Wikipedia: Which is why I find the idea of a Medieval Scotsman, Dwarvish or not, drinking beer to be anachronistic.

    What's up with Scottish Dwarves?!?

Do you have a sorcerer by the name of Rasputin? Man, that guy's eyes really creeps me out!

How much profanity in your game?

Almost never OoC. Fighters tend to cuss like sailors. Rogues sometimes use 'ghetto speech' or ebonics. It also really depends on the players. The ex-military types on the whole cuss more than the civilians as do the ex-jocks. The 'boyz from da hood' moreso that than suburban whitebread...

    Wizard vs. Fighter duels

First thing I'd have the wizard do is cast fly on himself. Then invisibility and then start buffing. Maybe cast dispel magic on the fighter. Or maybe charm person continuously until he fails. Once it does, convince him to take off all his armor and take a nap…. So many options, so little...

Have you given your kids fantasy names?

Are you so geeky that you gave your kids fantasy or mythic names? My daughter's middle name is Brynhild and my son will have Beowulf as his middle name. One of my players named his first son Alexander and the second son Arthur. Another player named his daughter Raven. Not quite the same, but...

Who is the coolest death god(dess)?

Oðinn Hung himself from the Tree of Woe long enough for a near-death experience to learn the runes. Literally gave his right eye to sup from Mimir's Well of wisdom. According to Tacitus, the Germans would sacifice people prior to battle to ensure victory and sacfifice afterwards to celebrate...

    What's up with Scottish Dwarves?!?

I can see from a PC adventurer perspective that Thor is more in line with adventuring that Volund/Wayland, Govannon/Goibhniu, or Hephaistos/Vulcan. From a GM perspective, I see Dwarves as being smiths, jewelers, merchants, and bankers. So I visualize them more as Hasidic Jews.

    What's up with Scottish Dwarves?!?

Yes the Norse and pagan Germans worshipped Thor. As you'll note in the original post, relations between the Germanic gods and the Dwarves were not at all that great. Thor especially makes a poor choice, viz. deity of the Atmosphere not Earth, literally kicked Dwarves around, etc.

    What's up with Scottish Dwarves?!?

Fair enough. I've been guilty of giving my Dwarves Yiddish accents. Then again, I've always thought that in Human societies, Dwarves would fill a niche comparable to that of the Medieval Urban Jew.

    What's up with Scottish Dwarves?!?

I've seen a number of references here and of course OoTS for Dwarves with Scottish accents. What is the origin of this stereotype? The LotR movies featured John Ryhs-Davies as Gimli. John spoke with his native Welsh accent. Baldur's Gate II featured an NPC Dwarf with a Scottish accent? Is...

Ever use Sleestaks in your campaign?

Thanks! I had forgotten about the Monet Cook gallery. The WoTC Quanak are a good start but not quite the Sleestak or Altrusians.

Ever use Sleestaks in your campaign?

Throughout the years playing Grymwurld,™ I've alluded to a primordial sentient race of saurian humanoids. Children of Ophion and ancestors of the Yuan-ti and Lizardfolk. Off the record, I've told my players that this primordial race is heavily influenced by the Sleestak (and their Altrusian...
