The Hoplite (think Spartan, Greek, Roman)

Spartans!!! This gets my vote. This prestige class should possess puissance with javelins and spears that no other class can touch. A halberd-wielding Spartan totally kills the image for me. Are you trying to reproduce the "300" Spartans from the movie or the historical ones? Historical...

    Demographic Questions

Another thing to keep in mind is that rice farming is more labor-intensive than other forms of farming but also supports a higher population density. Also, in the sub-tropics and tropics you have more growing seasons (no frost) which when given good irrigation and/or precipitation can produce...

    Building a Norse Type Priest...

Agreed. Even a cursory glance at the Tacitus' writing on the Germans compared to Adam of Bremen, and Snorri Sturlasson's Icelandic writings and it becomes apparent that there was a quite a variation of beliefs and practices across lands and histories. Add in the ever-present problem of...

    Weapon Speed

Ah, but why are the enemies unable or afraid to close with him? It must be because Something Very Bad™ will happen. Either an automatic hit, auto crit, or a coup de grace. In my personal experience from both sides of the polearm, it is absolutely true that after being hit by the longer weapon, a...

    Weapon Speed

QFT That's why I learned to fight with a polearm in close quarters. But getting past that first spear, polearm, or greatsword strike is not going to be easy, even with a tower shield! Sometimes I wonder if granting an attack of opportunity is enough. Maybe allowing the hit to be a confirmed...

    Building a Norse Type Priest...

To quote from Wikipedia Some additional thoughts: If a character dies in battle, then Raise Dead, Resurrection, and True Resurrection won't work as the character is now in Valhalla. The Norse cleric would honor all of the Aesir whereas the druids would serve the Vanir. Instead of turn...

    Weapon Speed

Heh heh, not just cool but the Holy Grail of role playing games! I'd pay big money for that!

    Starting up a rare-magic-item campaign

Take a look at the CONAN RPG. Those characters get stat bonus increases to all abilities in addition to the single ability increase of core D&D. Increasing ability scores is one way to offset lack of magic items. Eliminate low-level items. For example, the only rings of invisibility are...

    Weapon Speed

3.5 Power Attack grants a 2 × damage bonus instead of the 1 ½ bonus of 3.0. You could expand the PA rules to grant 1 ½ bonus to one-handed mass arms (clubs, maces, hammers, & axes) and to two-handed long swords and two-handed bastard swords. And apply the same rules for Strength. This would...

    Weapon Speed

Agreed 100% Given that the OP wants his players to think through their weapon choice more carefully, where should he draw the line? Weapon speed? Armor as DR? Armor penetration? Weapon reach? These questions have been around as long as D&D with no satisfactory answers for those of us who...

    Weapon Speed

QFT I too have kicked a lot of dagger fighter butt with my polearm!

    Weapon Speed

If you're going to include weapon speed, I think you should also include weapon reach as well. For example, there is the oft spouted argument that the dagger wielder should get more attacks against the greatsword wielder. What they forget, is that the greatsword wielder gets at least an attack...

    Building a Norse Type Priest...

But some of the priests did as part of fertility rituals. IIRC, Tacitus (or maybe Julius Caesar) made mention of white-robed priests. Also each head of household, clan head, chieftain, war king, etc. was expected to perform rituals and gain the favors of the gods. There are a number of...

    How to make PCs heroes!

Everyone once in a while, the party encounters a large number of low-level opponents (mercanaries, goblinoids, etc.). This gives them a chance to trash-talk their opponents and back it up with great cleave, fireballs, lightning bolts, cloudkills, etc. Sometimes it is a sheer joy to just...

A proposal for an alternate form of level draining

Sounds good to me. I also have a house rule than when the life-drainer is killed, all levels stolen are restored to the victims. THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!!!

    D&D is Unfun [humorous troll]

I've been playing D&D for 30 years and have come to the conclusion that D&D is unfun for the following [tongue-in-cheek] reasons: Level Drain: Whether from undead or lifestealing swords, losing levels is unfun. When my character loses levels I have to refigure the character sheet. And losing...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Level Draining Hi Gary, I wanted to get your opinion on the level draining ability of undead. Personally I have no problem with it both as a player and as a DM. I believe that between turning undead and restoration, a careful party can deal with such creatures successfully albeit with a great...

A proposal for an alternate form of level draining

I can buy the argument that level drain in 3e is a royal pain in the butt for the same reason that buffs are a pain in the butt — too much bookkeeping or rather it takes a computer to manage character sheets now. But as for the rest of your argument…. I must respectively disagree wholeheartedly.

A proposal for an alternate form of level draining

This is really a sad commentary on 3rd Edition. I sincerely hope that 4th Edition cuts the bookkeeping back to 2nd edition amount. IMHO I think that anytime we have to tell a DM 'dont do that as it causes too much bookeeping' D&D loses a piece of its soul.

Bengalii, the children of the Beastlands!

Please change the name as it sounds exactly like the word the natives of the Bengal state of India use to refer to themselves. If this race is supposed to be tiger-like, why not call them Lesser Rakshasas? Or Tygrans?
