    Returning to 4e

Player characters. Sort of a hybrid 4e/Moldvay Basic homebrew. Also, the Nentir Vale "gods" are refluffed into "immortals" (but keep the 4e names).

    Returning to 4e

I had been playing recently with the idea of building new "race-classes": the elf (combo of slayer and mage), the dwarf (combo of knight and thief), and the handling (combo of slayer and thief).

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

Aw, man; don't leave us hanging like that! A 4e wizard in that situation would need to stay within 5 squares--I mean, 25', of the cleric. As a tangentially related observation, that same wizard, if he wanted to fly around while invisible, would need to cast "Fly" first, then "Invisible".

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

As an experiment, could someone play out a string of encounters between fighters and a wizard? We need a double blind test, of course, and a control group of players who knows what is going on.

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

That's sort of what I was trying to say. To paraphrase Colville, Gygax was "planting his flag" on the hill of pulp fantasy. The game rules were supposed to evoke Conan and Farfa...Farver...Big Sword Dude and the Grey Mouser. That's just, like, your opinion, man. Well, you're probably correct...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

One more thing that may have an impact on the feel of earlier editions: the first few editions of the game weren't just rules for dungeon crawling or having adventures, they were rules for building a particular sort of shared world. I base this on Matt Colville's discussion of the rules in his...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

To add to my previous comment (instead of editing it again), my initial observations about what made earlier editions "feel" a certain way are limited by my having to rely on the rules as written, since I have very little--well, actually, non-existent experience actually playing with the rules...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

Check out "The Fourth Turning" or the book "Pendulum". This isn't supposed to be an "Edition X is the superior one" discussion. It's not even a "here are the reasons 4e is really D&D, or really does feel like D&D" discussion, although there has been some of that in this thread. Dungeons and...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

Wait...the Man in Black is WESLEY???? Spoilers, dude!

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

Exactly so; the character's resources in 4E were "within himself", as it were, while in other editions the resources were what the character has in his knapsack. If you haven't watched Matthew Colville's excellent series "How to make a fighter in every edition of D&D, I recommend you do so. In...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

D&D was originally a game about exploration and resource management with combat elements (sort of a Tolkienian Oregon Trail game). It quickly developed elements of heroic narrative, due to the nature of the setting. Based on my understanding of the rules, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and now 5th Edition all...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

Even though I've already posted my thoughts on "the best thing in [4E] life", I want to add that I really like essentials. It's not for everybody; I get that. Core 4e is a culmination of D&D ideas that had been percolating for years, and Essentials is a step back from that bold push forward...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

Two allies, through a misunderstanding, quarrel, and the Dungeon Creation Gem is stolen by an unknown third party. Members of each faction must join together to recover the gem, but can they trust each other? Hijinx ensue. The Gygaxians get a +1 bonus to all basic melee and basic ranged...

    D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss

Tangentially related: I don't actually own any 5E products (except the starter set), but one could play this using the free Basic Rules, right?

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

You mean the sparring between the Gygaxian and the Arnesian? Sounds like a solid plot hook to me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss

I saw this at the bookstore the other day, and thought the artwork quite evocative. Is it any good? I'm unfamiliar with these books, but they look like adventure paths in a book. How high a level so the characters reach by the end?

Does anyone use "The Adventurers' Guild"?

From what I can tell, there is no mention of an adventurers' guild in the early D&D rules (I purchased the pdf versions of B/X, Mentzer's Basic Rules, Rules Cyclopedia, and 1st Edition AD&D). The first place I can find the concept is the crpg "The Bard's Tale".
