For 4vengers: What is your preferred fallback edition?

cavalier973: Burning Wheel? It's an entirely different kind of roleplaying, altogether. Rumack, Randy: [together] It's an entirely different kind of roleplaying.

For 4vengers: What is your preferred fallback edition?

Aw, crud; I picked the wrong polling option. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking. They should be visible to anyone who votes. So far (as of 09/22 @ 6:27 a. m. CST), no one has picked 0e or 3e. We have 2 votes for Basic (well, 3, but one of the votes is mine, and I'm not counting...

For 4vengers: What is your preferred fallback edition?

AbdulAlhazred: What was it we had for dinner tonight? Elaine Dickinson: Well, we had a choice of steak or fish. AbdulAlhazred: Yes, yes, I remember, I had lasagna.

For 4vengers: What is your preferred fallback edition?

You've somehow managed to get tickets to VaporCon, and arrived ready to play some D&D! Unfortunately, all the 4th edition games are filled up, because it's just so popular. There are, however, openings for games that use the rules to these other editions: 0e, Basic (B/X & BECMI), AD&D 1, AD&D...

Will I still love my girlfriend in 4th Edition?

"He looks like a Pathfinder player." For some reason, I am reminded of thus quote from "The Once and Future King": "He was remorseless, disillusioned, logical, predatory, fierce, pitiless--but his great jewel of an eye was that of a stricken deer, large, fearful, sensitive and full of griefs...

    D&D 4E Who's still playing 4E

I know that I have been procuring the 4E books in pdf form off dndclassics.com They now have the Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms available. I'm waiting as patiently as I can for Heroes of the Fallen Lands (of which I already have two print copies) and both Monster Vaults.

    D&D 4E Brainstorming a "Phil. of 4e 101" resource

So far, from what I can gather, the Philosophy of 4e entails these elements: 1. The PCs are not merely adventurers or heroes, but protagonists. They are the Venter of the story. A PC's death, unlike, say Moldvay B/X, has ramifications for the direction that the group-crafted story will take. 2...

    Ability Score Adjustments

I did not realize that was an option with B/X D&D. Perhaps I should read the Expert Rules.

    Ability Score Adjustments

For Basic D&D (Moldvay, etc.), is there any point to increasing a character's ability score (via the ability adjustment rules--subtract 2 from some other ability to increase by 1 the prime requisite score) within the same range? For example, is there any point to increasing a character's STR...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

I will reiterate that 2d6+6 is the optimal method for rolling scores. One can still roll as high as 18, but the lowest score that one Will see is 8.

D&D 5E (2014) (NPC) Stat array: how would you allocate?

If you're playing B/X, the 4 goes in DEX.

Recently bought 5.0, being drawn to 1981 Moldvay Basic

dndclassics is awesome. I got the B/X sets and adventures B1 and B2. I had the basic rules printed out and bound, and am planning in having B2 printed/bound as well, so that I can play with my kids. Once we finish that, I plan to print the expert rules. You should blog your play experience(s).

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

The rule that bugged me was that a character without proficiency with shields got no bonus from using one. It makes more sense to grant the bonuses (or, at least the AC bonus), and apply a penalty to attacks, etc. Further, it's strange to require a character to spend 2 feats to be proficient...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

One could also choose to play an eladrin wizard, which would begin with proficiency with long swords.

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

One could also develop an array (say, 15, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9) and have the "random rolling" decide which score goes with which stat.

    D&D 4E Who's still playing 4E

Keep on the Borderlands/Chaos Scar. I'm thinking about using house rules to gimp the characters and to award XP based on the amount of treasure recovered.

    Schrodinger's HP and Combat

Sort of like how Inigo Montoya gets stabbed several time by Count Rugen, and almost loses, but pushes through the pain to fight back and win. (In the book, Inigo goes over in his mind the lessons from his teacher, and it helps him to quickly build the resolve to stand up and fight back).
