    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

I have heard the claim that 4e is a nice tactical miniatures game, if one liked that sort of thing, but it isn’t a role playing game. I will direct everyone’s attention to Matthew Colville’s “Dusk” campaign, available free of charge on YouTube. The players all chose non-humans for their...

    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

My 4e fighter gained his powers by being struck by lightning while simultaneously being bitten by a wolf. More seriously, the DMG2 has a section on adventure paths that mentions that the PCs spontaneously develop their powers by being too near an extra planar rift that opens near the town where...

    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

Over the top action, protagonists that are effective at their jobs, and a story that shows the value of teamwork and friendship when fighting bad guys. Epic fun.

Dare I say it? 4e is the “Kung Fury” edition of D&D “It’s my job.”

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

I want to run a group through “Keep in the Shadowfell”, but with a better team than the pregens. I’m thinking, Warlord, Fighter, Paladin, Warlock, and Wizard, with each PC optimized (at least three of them with a “20” in their main stats). You know, an actual “4e” party.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

I was making characters using the offline character builder, and noticed that the cleric power “Righteous Brand” had been changed from granting a bonus equal to the cleric’s STR bonus to granting a straight +3 bonus to an ally’s attack against the same target. I disagree with that change, and...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

clenches fist, grinds teeth “Must…control….rising…nerdrage!” Actually, that’s a fair point, about Tarkin not knowing; however, it is a reasonable assumption that he, being a high level officer of the Empire, would be privy to such knowledge. Even then, Tarkin may have hidden that knowledge...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

Not to derail this excellent thread too much, but the Emperor was not a Sith Lord, or even a Force user. Tarkin made it clear that Darth Vader was the only Force user left.

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

People are still riled. The rile has not abated. Such riling has never been known, in any kingdom. It was, “The Rilinging”.

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

To be fair, I don’t consider any movie after Star Wars (a.k.a. “Episode IV: A New Hope”) as canon. Darth Vader is NOT Luke’s father. folds arms and scowls

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

It’s not that people are saying, “4th edition rules were not to my taste, for these reasons, and so I avoid that edition.” It’s not that people are saying, “4th edition was unsuccessful for these reasons.” It’s the attitude that people are gleeful that 4e failed, and that some are trying to...

    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

The core 4e wizard cantrips were all utility spells. None of them did damage, and none of them could physically hinder another creature, though they could be used to deceive or direct attention. Even “Light” doesn’t have the B/X function of blinding another creature. They gave the 4e wizard...

    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

Check out the YouTube podcast “3d6, Down the Line”, especially their current campaign, “The Halls of Arden Vul”. They use a few houserules, but they stick closely to the Moldvay Basic/OSE rules, with mapping and carefully counting rations and torches. It has been very entertaining, to me. The...

Depends on what my wife says. I want the physical books, but I already spent a lot for the Dolmenwood Kickstarter, so I may only get the PDFs.

Sing to me, O Muse, of BECMI!

This is a great post, and I am going over to drivethrurpg as soon as I am able to check out your recommendations. Something that I am curious about: in the Dolmenwood Campaign book, there is a chart for random encounters that describes the monsters doing something other than either attacking or...
