D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

Remember when Tallahassee blew the air horn, and all the zombies rushed him? That was awesome.

The thing I like about the Essentials slayer is that, when built properly, the slayer, at first level, can hit an AC of 15 with a roll of “2”. The advantage of Essentials classes is the reduction by one of the number of ability scores that fuel the characters’ powers. For example, the core...

I like how a 4e fighter can step to the middle of the room, widen his stance, grip his sword with both hands, and say, “Fourth Edition is the best edition of Dungeons and Dragons!” (Or, alternately, “Fourth Edition wasn’t ‘real’ D&D!”) and all enemies within range will rush at him. There isn’t...

season one of “Acquisitions, Inc.” is the first time that Mike Kruhulic (sp?) a.k.a. “Jim Darkmagic” first played D&D, and the listener gets to learn along with Mike the rules of the game, because he isn’t afraid to ask questions. It’s unfortunate that they only recorded the audio. He asks why...

I like that the orc chieftain can order another orc that just got killed to make one more attack—and the dead orc does it! I like that all the Monster Vault orcs already have the ability to make one last attack when dropping to zero hit points. Edit: rereading the orc chieftain’s power, it...

“Is it a hit?” “Negative. Negative. It just impacted on the surface.”

As I understand it, Dungeons and Dragons and Advanced Dungeons and Dragons are different games, and that it was proven so in a court of law. So, I propose that 4e be called “Extreme Advanced Dungeons and Dragons”, to prevent confusion.

I like how 4e fighters are so awesome that they can hurt you, even if they can’t hit you.

In my game, a barrel dragon kidnapped the princess, and flew to the top of a high tower. The PCs have to fight their way to the top of the tower as the dragon spits flaming barrels at them. Sometimes, I will allow the PCs to find a +3 hammer, that can smash the barrels.

Bonuses rather than penalties (usually). A wizard can pick up the spear of her fallen comrade and stab at the hobgoblin king without a penalty to the attack roll—she doesn’t get a proficiency bonus, but, unless her STR is less than 10, she isn’t penalized, either.

Just having a PC’s starting HP be equal to the CON score was brilliant.

In my game, all PCs have a single hit point each, and if a monster even touches them, they die. Fortunately, they each start out with three lives, and have the opportunity to gain a fourth life if they can reach a certain score during play.

The four cantrips of the wizard really sold me on that class. The ability to routinely do minor magic tricks—especially “Prestidigitation”—fits my idea of what a storybook wizard can do. I like the little background ideas it gives in the intro for several of the classes. For the fighter, it...

For my part, it’s the (from my perspective) elevating of the Forgotten Realms as the core campaign world. I was a huge fan of the Nentir Vale. FR is not to my taste.
