OD&D Keep on the Borderlands, some observations

I was going to say “Cary Grant” or “Gary Cooper”, but I wondered how many people would know who those guys were. Reminds me of a Frank James sketch:

OD&D Keep on the Borderlands, some observations

The module describes the priest as a jovial person, a fine companion, and a good listener, but no details are given to what he looks like. From Hollywood, I immediately think of a fat, jolly Friar Tuck, but what if he is more like a good-guy character played by Tom Hanks or George Clooney? Tall...

OD&D Keep on the Borderlands, some observations

I don’t really know. It’s hard to say. I don’t think of Forgotten Realms as very much of a points of light setting. Too much civilization. It’s similar in feel to Mystara, in that powerful empires squabble over borders instead of vast swaths of uninhabited wilderness peppered with small...

OD&D Keep on the Borderlands, some observations

Maybe you’re right, but I personally find B2 more compelling than “Lost Mines of Phandelver”. I have taken the latter adventure out multiple times, intending to run it, but after reading a few pages, I pack it all back into the box and throw it back into the closet. I never played any D&D as a...

OD&D Keep on the Borderlands, some observations

People’s tastes may vary, and it is possible that a lot of people really like B2 because it is so sparse on details. There is a lot of potential to improve what’s there. What if, instead of a mad hermit, there is a witch who was chased out of the keep, and hides in the forest, nursing her...

OD&D Keep on the Borderlands, some observations

You are correct, but it still seems like the B/X rules with regard to random encounters can be improved upon, beyond meeting monsters that can be friendly or hostile. Part of the problem may be the familiarity people have with the rules, and that they know what they are looking at when a...

OD&D Keep on the Borderlands, some observations

Nothing I write here will be new (probably). I was reading through my copy of this module, thinking about trying to run it again with the tax deductions. As Professor Dungeon Master said in one of his videos, this is a mini-Westmarch campaign, except it's really an "Eastmarch-style campaign"...

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

Splug saved Acq-Inc’s bacon down in the dungeons of the Keep on the Shadowfell. Voiced by DM James Wyatt. Of course, the world’s greatest goblin is Squeegee.*

Other D&D Variant Dolmenwood: An Interview with Gavin Norman

Were you in Jon’s in-person campaign, or are you one of the Thunderclumps?

    OSR Why B/X?

Someone said it like that, in an earlier post, which is why I said it the other way, just to be funny.

    OSR Why B/X?

There are some suboptimal pieces in the RC, but there are some very nice pieces, as well. The table of contents page has a line of warriors waiting to sign up to join an adventuring company (presumably). The guys doing the interviews look tired and a little worried. Several characters show up...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

The Essentials-era art was good. I liked the scene in the Rules Compendium of the two members of an adventuring party that are about to throw hands, two other members are trying to get between them, and the elf is standing nearby, sipping wine and rolling his eyes. The Monster Vault 2 Art was...

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

Dragon #410 has a page with a dragon that one can cut out, fold, and glue together.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

I was perusing issues of Dragon magazine, and saw, in issue #382, a solo adventure for a PC and the goblin Splug. Reference was made to a “D&D Test Drive”, with a hyperlink that no longer works. I didn’t remember the D&D Test Drive, and my initial thought was it was something to do with “D&D...

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

Oh, that is a shame, about the inaccessible files. Trying to figure out how to recover them would drive me to distraction. Maybe someone can do a list of the top recommended issues of both Dungeon and Dragon, as a help to anyone considering purchasing from dmsguild I know I started a thread...

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

Glancing through issues of 4e-era “Dragon” magazine, I see in issue #374, p. 53, the introduction of the Prince of Frost, and it reminds me of the “Cold Prince” in Dolmenwood.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

“Kobold Hall”, the short adventure at the back of the DM’s Guide, has potential beyond the mere five encounters in a row. Firstly, change the dragon at the end from white to green. In the first chamber, make the two squares in front of the glowing pool a slide trap (trap-loving kobolds do live...

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

A rule I think is easy to miss is the limit on magic item daily power use. If a heroic tier adventurer has a magic sword with a daily power, and a magic shield that also has a daily power, the adventurer can only use one or the other each day.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

I was looking for rules that support an idea I had: that a “turn” in 4e was five minutes (as opposed to B/X having ten minute turns). Eh. Certain powers produce effects that last until the end of the encounter, “or five minutes”. So…if rounds last six seconds, that would be ten rounds a minute...
