D&D 4E Adapting Scales of War to the Nentir Vale

Some time back, I ran a small adventure for the tax deductions, with Kalton Manor (basically) as the focal point. I was trying for a Faulknerian Southern Gothic feel, since the manor is near the swamp—Witchlight moss (Spanish moss), giant mosquitos (reskinned stirges), a creepy family cemetery...

D&D 4E Adapting Scales of War to the Nentir Vale

Kalton Manor is an abandoned manor house, as I recall. One would need to build a village nearby. Harkenwold is also an option.

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

I tried to run it, and had issues. For example, it isn’t clear whether or not the road is supposed to be usable by the PCs to get directly to the caves of chaos, or if they have to search “somewhere to the east”, hex-crawling, as it were, but in a grid, in order to find the caves. It spends an...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

He complains that none of the NPCs is named. I would guess that the DM is expected to provide names, to make the module the DM’s own, but Mearls attributes the lack of names to fascism. I think he was trying to be funny. It isn’t a real review; he doesn’t talk about anything substantive about...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E fans: what do you like about 4E?

Another thing about 4e that I liked: the publisher gave credit to the artists who produced the illustrations. Wayne Reynolds did the covers, but William O’Conner’s work probably defines the 4e art style. WoTC used many, many artists, though.

Epic Tier would basically be one giant skill challenge, interspersed with traditional encounters, and smaller skill challenges. The main challenge would be 30 successes before 3 failures.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

I cast “Raise Dead” on this thread I was scanning through the PHB and the DMG, looking for info on the passage of time. A round is 6 seconds, which only matters in combat. There is a mention of a “Base Exploration Speed Table”, but the only table is a “Base Overland Speed Table”, which has...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E fans: what do you like about 4E?

I would say that Moldvay taught how to run the Moldvay edition of the game. So did the Mentzer version. The Rules Cyclopedia…eh. I have the pdf of AD&D (1st edition), and I can’t tell you if it explains how to run D&D, because it is a challenging read, and I don’t care enough, at present, about...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E fans: what do you like about 4E?

The POD (softcover) of the DM Guide is available at dmsguild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/56694/Dungeon-Masters-Guide-4e?filters=0_0_45381_0_0_45349_0_0 The PHB and MM are still PDF only, though.

    D&D 4E D&D 4E fans: what do you like about 4E?

The 4e Dungeon Master’s guide is a champion cow. It begins with what the game is, and what the responsibilities of the DM are. It talks about the different types of players and what their goals are, and how to accommodate each of them. It talks about how to handle out of play conflict between...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E fans: what do you like about 4E?

The fact that Hit Points are specifically called out as a combo of mental and physical capabilities (and luck, etc.) to keep fighting. The warlord’s ability to literally shout at a maimed team mate, causing the team mate’s severed arm to reattach. I love that. J/K; the warlord’s ability to...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E fans: what do you like about 4E?

I’m addition to all that was said in previous posts, I would add that the 4e-era “Dungeon” and “Dragon” digital magazines were great. There was an issue that talked about the fallen Empire of Nerath (Dragon #393), and how players could tie their PCs to that lore—either as someone who honored...

Something I wrote a few years ago: Thread 'I am perfectly fine with WoTC producing D&D 5th Edition' https://www.enworld.org/threads/i-am-perfectly-fine-with-wotc-producing-d-d-5th-edition.316055/ My take-away of the OP is that I got incredibly lucky, in that I got a version of D&D that suits my...

Monopoly is not a game about business. It is a complicated form of Roulette. Also, Monopoly was ruined when they stopped using the dollar symbol, and started using a symbol for “Monopoly bucks”, or whatever it’s called.
