    Reactive World Design

What are the most common metals in use? for currency? for tools? for weapons? Can I play a half-dragon? ;) Are there dragons? What do the civilized folk know of their own history? Is there history (thinking of dawnforge)? Are there civilized folk?

    Getting Around in a Campaign

We ride ponies - it's an all dwarf campaign. Except my character, the lone human ranger/barbarian, with both Run and Endurance. He keeps pace with the ponies on foot.

he's picked, opened, tested, or broken every lock in town. Boredom, baby. The great motivator.

    Mac Users Identify Yourselves!

I know this comes a little late, and someone may have covered it already, but I thought I'd throw it out there as a cautionary tale for others. UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE AND BACKUP YOUR DATA before you upgrade to OS X! I have a friend with an old bubble-shaped iMac, who didn't do this, and it took...

The changes to gnomes in 3.5e

In my campaign, gnomes' favored class is cleric. Which gives them a really interesting twist, IMO. They are creatures of paradox - the most worldly, in their tinker-style madness, but also the most devout. Too bad no one's playing one right now. jtb

DarkMatter D20: Drunk Southern Girls with Guns ... UPDATED - 8/18/05!

Wow. Add irony to Piratecat's list of class skills.

    freak'in wealth system

Another thing that seems to be forgotten about the abstract wealth system, is that included in the abstraction is the idea that your wealth bonus is liquid assets. Meaning, that is what you could presumabley spend per month after meeting your financial obligations - rent, car payment...

Piratecat's Updated Story Hour! (update 4/03 and 4/06)

See, and that's the thing I admire most about you as a storycrafter and DM. Your world has so much verismilitude and is so well thought out that stuff like this can happen. Cause and effect, man. It's great and very inspiring. jtb

Is your world round? Do the PCs know it.

My campaign world is a confluence between the elemental planes - a temporary and somewhat unstable overlapping of the elements brought into being by a god and held in place by the will of the people. So, it is neither flat nor round, but instead just a strange little anomaly. jtb

World War II Resources for d20 Fun...

The flying boat picture? One of the commisioned artworks to be featured in Rocketship Empires, coming soon from StoryART Games! /commercial Hey, does anyone know of a simple, easy-to-read timeline for WWII? I'm thinking of running (somewhere in the murky future) an Indiana Jones/The...

    Useless arcane or divine spells

Much to the chagrin of my compatriots, that was one of my favorite spells in earlier days. That campaign got a little out of hand on many fronts, though, so I wasn't that out of line... jtb

    Ranger illustration(new update10/21 Goblin King)

Really really good! Lots of dynamic interest, great use of the media. Overall, I like it a lot. If you don't mind a little criticism, though, I will say that the hatching on the left-hand tree is a little rough - it's obvious that you were using short strokes overlapping, all parallel. The...

    How much Homebrew to Brew?

As a player, I like to know: General direction of the campaign (i.e. 'undead hunters' or 'stuck on an island with orcs' or 'looking for the crown of the dead dwarf king', etc...) Anything that will affect character creation (for example, changes to class skills, forbidden classes, differing...

If you could try a RPG that ISN'T D&D...

Player: Mutants and Masterminds - I'm about to start playing in a Champions Game and would much rather be d20 with it all... *sigh* Cthulu D20 (X-files style, or maybe pulp-era) - I could never run it, but I would sure love to play in it! Spycraft or a super-spy D20 Modern game - yeah, baby...

(Calling all Rat Bastards! It's CRUNCH time!) Adventure ideas on the Lightening Rail

Well, there's always Murder on the Orient Express... Agatha Christie Classic... And then there's that dreadful Steven Seagal movie, Under Seige 2... And the end of Back to the Future 3... The key, it would seem, to a good train adventure is the idea that there is a time limit. Either the...

Have you used Artifacts in your games?

Yes - though, frankly, it doesn't do much. There are four, actually - a matched set of elemental amulets, which together bind the elemental planes together into the Prime. The PC's have one (air), have seen another (water), think they know who has the third (fire) and have heard tell of the...

Paladin of Torm / PCs Frustrated with Cormyr

Several things occur to me here, all of which are my own opinions. 1) Paladins are supposed to be more good than lawful, if forced to make a choice. 2) I have always though that 'lawful' was a REALLY bad choice of words. IMO, it should have been 'honorable' or a similar word. I don't think...
