D&D 5E (2024) What should be the Optimization and Magic Item Assumption of PCs be?

Simply by virtue of the fact that there is no telling how optimized any party is going to be, and therefore no real way to account for it other than difficulty gates, which are not a great fit for ttrpgs, I think the bulk of the balancing should be on the magic item side.

    D&D General #Dungeon23

Behind? Who's behind? Certainly not me, ha ha ha ha LOVE 22. Foyer - Carvings in Draconic on the wall espouse the glory and symbiotic nature of Dragons and Mushrooms. A disaffected kobold, Teklu, is carving graffiti below making fun of those ideas. 23. Steam Room - Making use of the water...

How long on average are your game sessions?

My longest running group has an easier time meeting on weeknights, and we all work relatively standard office hours. So, between commutes, eating, and getting back home at a reasonable time, we have always aimed for 7pm-10pm, knowing that we likely won't start playing until 7:30, and I'll toss a...

D&D 5E (2014) Which of these possible endings do you prefer to see in every published adventure *as written*?

If I'm running a module, it's because I'm interested in the story and actively want the assistance of not having to come up the framework from whole cloth. So, the bare minimum I'm looking for is a writeup for what happens if the antagonist/conflict of the module is directly confronted, and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Change in Charisma Description

This is also how I approach it, and why I generally don't think of looks as factor of that in my games. I would say the vast majority of situations where a Charisma modifier comes up, attractiveness, without even getting in to how personally variable that assessment is, doesn't really have a...

Now that this is over (for now at least) What are you going to do?

The same thing I do every night, Pinky. Stress about scheduling my next session. I will say, this news has re-invigorated my interest in the playtest, and for posting on places like this.

D&D General WotC Reveals New Information and Covers for 'Keys from the Golden Vault'

It makes them easier to understand. I personally found it so bare bones that it was not easier to run.

D&D General How serious are your D&D games?

I keep wanting to argue for something between GotG and LotR, and then I keep adding caveats that drag it back towards the sillier side of that middle. Really, it's just that I try to present realistic goals, stakes, difficulties, and people to interact with, and it's not my goal to be funny...

Week 3: SUNKEN 15. Fight Pit - A hexagonal depression has been carved out of the center of this chamber. A ghostly voice calls out for new challengers. 16. The Ruptured Basin - Origin of the water that now floods the area. A slow trickle still ebbs from the mostly empty catch basin 17. Armory -...

Read the actual OGL document and take the survey when it comes out

This would be very easy for them/their data analysis software to classify as "junk" data, and separate from the rest of the results. You'll get responses like that even on surveys where the subject matter isn't as emotionally charged as this one is for this audience. That's why, on some forms...

WotC What is the last WotC adventure you played in or DM'd?

I'm technically in a Storm King's Thunder with a very very shaky schedule, but Lost Mine of Phandelver was the last one I completed.

    D&D General #Dungeon23

I'm so impressed by all the people who are doing this by hand. Like, not even getting into the extra detailed stuff like isometric perspectives, or colors, or even just illustrating the objects in the room/area. My real life dex mod when it comes to stuff like penmanship is negative, and this...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Solution to Perception?

Oh, sure, that's the approach that has a better chance of actually resulting in change. I just have more fun highlighting the uselessness of the roll with obviously non-actionable filler. Just to be clear, though, if they do go to roll, I don't wait for it to finish, I just barrel through with...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Solution to Perception?

I just start describing what they see, and they get this confused look in their eye, and they say "Don't I need to roll?" and I say "You can if you want to," and then carry on with my description, utterly unimpacted by it. Maybe I throw in a "You spot a beautiful kestrel swooping through the...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Solution to Perception?

I have players regularly ask for perception checks for things as simple and risk free as looking out a window... I'm very pro-leaning on passive perception regularly, I even really like using it as a floor.
