    D&D 5E (2024) Group Checks?

It does bum me out that this steps on the classic trope of someone about to bumble thoughtlessly past a corner/into a object/on a twig before someone grabs them by the shoulder and yanks them back. I probably won't listen that to that particular caveat personally, though I can appreciate the...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

A lot of the questions have been "Why do you as DM not like giving authorial control of X degree to players," and I didn't want to speak for those that felt strongly there. However, as a player: I look to different games for different things, and in some I'd be excited and expecting to...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I'm suddenly reminded of this thread, which ended up covering a lot of similar ground. I have to say, that one did a lot to sway me towards the idea of non-clerics/paladins/etc. pleading for divine intervention successfully, by virtue of the host of story options that result.

Playing in Person Is Just Better (for me)

Even with my online groups, most people have still opted to roll live rather than go through the hassle of formatting online sheets.

Playing in Person Is Just Better (for me)

That's so interesting to me, because I've personally found online play slows things down to a crawl. Maybe if my online groups were composed of more tech savvy folks, it would be different, but between technical problems, people talking over each other and needing to repeat, and needing to flip...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Exactly why I do my best to not rely on Rule 0 logic in a game where it is not explicitly included in the rule set.

    Spoilers Agatha All Along discussion

My friend said she'd never seen a show rely so openly on reverse dramatic irony, where the characters have the knowledge that contextualizes everything but is held back from the viewers, and man does that encapsulate a lot of my issues with the show. The reveals at the end sure did answer some...

Blades in the Dark Gets First Official Expansion

When I ran this, my first session, I handed out harm...not freely, but as it felt justified, and quickly realized just how debilitating even minor harm could become and stack. The new rules for that alone definitely are sparking my enthusiasm to get that group back together.

D&D General Brancolonia Italian Spaghetti Fantasy 5e?

I'm stuck on the "Who do I know I could get excited to play this" problem, but I've been lowkey interested in it ever since watching

    having strange problem with site?

I was having this issue with multiple browsers on my home computer over the same time frame, but restarting my PC appears to have fixed it. Perhaps there is an outdated certificate / some sort of network configuration not updating as it should?

D&D 5E (2024) Another new interview with Perkins & Wyatt about the 2024 DMG

Because that would have been even more helpful to me, and I'm sure there are people who may have had that intention and then got overwhelmed by how '14 started with building an entire world, or didn't have the benefit of having been a player before and thus having even less of an existing...

D&D 5E (2024) Another new interview with Perkins & Wyatt about the 2024 DMG

My running of the starter set went so much smoother because I sat and read both the PHB and DMB first. The starter set is for eliminating obstacles to a group sitting down and starting quickly, and works for those who learn by doing. It is not a good resource in that regard for people who want...

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

Very much agreed. Railroading, as an active verb, is the specific term used because trains can only go where tracks are already laid. If players are "being railroaded", that requires, at least to me, that they are actively trying to leave the tracks and not being allowed to do so, or are roughly...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

I really hate watching video tutorials for anything, every person I've watched teach the game has brought their personal biases into the process (which is inevitable, and not inherently bad, but wildly variable), and I taught myself to play by reading through the PHB, so I'm going to advocate...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Having alternate methods is great, and different methods work better for different people, but if an RPG book's best recourse is to direct you to an external resource like an experienced table or a video, in my opinion, that is a relative failing of the text.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Well hey, glad you've got A5e to design for, sincerely! From what I heard described, it sounds like it does a lot that I personally don't care for. Because I see positives to the decision, it's not a matter of comfort, I actively like the change. Calling the '24 design just straight up bad...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Fair points! I just think it's positive design choice to attempt to reduce that frustration and confusion, and make all classes more approachable for new or unconfident players.
