    D&D 5E (2024) New D&D Edition's Player’s Handbook Alternate Art Cover Reveal

Thank you for this, I went to look at my local place, and pre-orders for the PHB had already sold out. I placed one for the DMG and MM, and the next day the DM was sold out as well, so skated under the wire there.

Does Your Campaign Have a BBEG? Does it Need One?

I understand the satisfaction of a well executed one, pun unfortunately intended, but it makes me so sad to see countless requests for advice on the lines of "I'm starting a campaign next week, how do I create/introduce/make my party scared of the BBEG?" It is not a thing every campaign needs...

    D&D 5E (2014) There Will Be No More Hydro74 Alternate D&D Covers

Similarly, the Rules Expansion set and Shattered Obelisk were the alts I picked up, and Planescape was the only one beyond that I was interested in. I do appreciate the consistent art style, but theirs was not one that won me over well enough.

How Serious Do You Like Your Gaming?

I will say, it's been fun to be in a low stakes low consequences sure-why-not style game recently, but even going into that intending it to be that, it regularly goes farther into silliness than I ever would. That said, I'm violently curious about Paranoia.

How Serious Do You Like Your Gaming?

I think the simplest, most generally applicable way I can describe it is: I prefer gaming where jokes undercutting the tension/emotion/drama of serious moments are infrequent. There are places for wholeheartedly silly scenes, there are even serious moments where a joke is the perfect reaction...

    D&D 5E (2024) How you going to roll... 5.24 into your game(s)?

As a player, I'll be (gently) pushing to run my current characters under the new rules. Unlike my paladin, my monk won't have the updated subclass, but the rest of the changes are enough on their own to entice me. I'm already the rules resource for the both of those DMs, so odds are they'll both...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

Well, sure, definitionally. If I were to have a reason personally I liked species ASI, then I might push back against it. But I try to listen to issues people are sincerely arguing they are having, and always try to frame their desires in the most positive light. It wasn't hard work to sway me...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

Why wouldn't I care about things that actively bother other people, even if it doesn't affect me (and if I gain nothing from it personally), especially if their arguments are persuasive?

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

No, as I defined/understand it, that does become innate, which was an aspect I actively did not care for, especially when considering other peoples' vocal dislike of it.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

As someone who had no particular fondness for species mandated ASIs, but also likes attaching them to backgrounds (would have also probably been fine with cultures) more than them being pure free floating, a huge part of the reason why is that backgrounds aren't innate, at all, at least not how...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #3: "New Paladin"

I've used Wrathful Smite probably 10x as much as I have Divine. Huge fan of anything that makes waiting on a crit to use your slots as a Paladin less of a 'default option'. So, bonus action timing gets a thumbs up from me.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 D&D character sheet, what do you think?

That is exactly why I gently push any players of mine to consider using this version instead. I really love that it gives a space to write any sort of proficiency, and doesn't bog it down with text for all of the skills that are just identical to the base modifier. Credit where credit is due.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

The way I concieve of the ability in a way that satisfies my understanding of the world is about experience (plus instincts derived from that) and knowledge, not family resources/expectations or inherent quality of the person.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

Based on looks alone, not inherently, no, but if someone has been raised in a place where matters of state are definitionally the most central part their background/history, it would not be surprising at all, to me, that they knew how to invoke courtly graces, diplomacy, or negotiation as...

How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

Chekhov's Gun is a relevant piece of advice, not a rule, in most creative endeavors. You can apply it to paintings. (but also it was written for theatre and taking it out of that context does fundamentally change the nature of it)

Planning vs. Riffing: On Being Over Prepared

One session, I was asked for the name of a rock troll bouncer. Names are my improv kryptonite in particular. Panicking, stalling, I look across the table, one of my players had a can of Canada Dry with the label pointed at me. "Name's Candy, now why are you back here?" It wasn't until after...

Who are your favorite TTRPG reviewers?

It's fairly new, but I'm really enjoying Quinn's Quest (of Shut Up and Sit Down fame), especially given the consideration that he's only reviewing systems he's had a chance to run for...I want to say at least six sessions?

How important are and RPG's aesthetics to you?

Pastoral and whimsical catches my eye easily, and grimdark really has to do something special to get past my initial aversion. If the core of the game, or the mechanics really capture my interest, then I'm not going to let aesthetics stop me, but, well, there are probably games where I would...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

Absolutely what I'm going to do. Considering I was giving level one feats before, it's essentially maintaining the status quo. Those backgrounds were never campaign altering aspects, but I can think of several different memorable moments that exist only because of them in my past games. Fun...
