D&D General Who “owns” a PC after the player stops using them?

A PC is a player's creation first and foremost, so, much like I wouldn't want to narrate them doing something that runs directly counter to the players envisioning of them at the table, if they have been retired or walked away from, I also wouldn't want to take them in a direction that the...

Should a TTRPG have a singular Core Rulebook or more?

I agree with everything after the bolded, in general, I'm fine with pushing that out to a separate book, for multiple reasons. However, the reason I voted one book in the poll is that I think the core book should include everything you fundamentally need to play the game, which to me absolutely...

    Kickstarter Deal-Breakers (Poll)

There are several options I selected up there that that would stop me, but honestly, the most common one is simply that the cost of the base whatever-it-is of the kickstarter is higher than I was ready to casually spend on first blush having just learned of it.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I will ask both the tables I am running and the tables I'm playing in if they're alright with switching. I both like many of the changes, and would prefer to be on the most up to date official ruleset so as to mitigate any confusion.

D&D General Official D&D In Decline. Source Hasbro.

It's honestly to the point where I see that youtube channel, and I assume the opposite of whatever the headline says is more likely to be true.

Coen Brothers - The Movies and the Ranking!

While I've got a few to go yet, I feel pleased as punch upon revisiting Inside Llewyn Davis that it was just as wonderful and rich as I remembered, and as I predicted, ended up right there next to Fargo as one of their strongest films. I don't think anything is likely to displace it for a while...

D&D General Using Tarot Cards in D&D

As much as I'm generally loath to recommend him due to certain attitudes and overall style, I have been wanting to try out the Angry GM's adventuring/dungeon building tarot technique. That article is thankfully a bit less needlessly abrasive than the average.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever roll for monster HPs in 5E?

It definitely was very fun for the table, early on in LMoP, when after a couple attacks whittled down a 12 HP goblin, the next player rolled minimum damage, and still managed to take out the undamaged 2HP goblin in one blow.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever roll for monster HPs in 5E?

Yep. Part of my prep for each session, if I know certain combats are likely, is rolling the HP of each combatant in advance. Even if it's a random of unexpected encounter though, I still always roll.

Ah, gotcha, sorry for missing that specificity.

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

In the book, most of the factions have a current situation written up that is primed to cause some degree of chaos or change of status in Duskvol, and an associated clock for progress on their goal regarding that. Whenever the PCs finish a score, and are going through the downtime phase: So...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

I thought about including that idea, but it muddled my wording too much. Absolutely, you could do that, and it would definitely have suspense, but I personally disagree that it would be essentially the same. Very different types of stress and tension, that I feel would fundamentally change the...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

We're talking about artistic choices, so I doubt I'm going to change your mind offhandedly. Different people and genres and works have different goals, one piece of advice rarely works for all. Again, there's a world of difference between the style of play that Chekhov wrote, and your preferred...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

That doesn't really capture what Chekhov's Gun is about. This is not saying there can't be set dressing, or ancillary details to things. There's a reason the example is a loaded gun, and not a cup of tea. A gun has intrinsically higher stakes, and the audience is going to focus on it because of...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you award XP and how often?

At the end of each session, broken out by event. Rewarded for defeating foes, getting past obstacles, resolving problems, and completing goals. It's feels great to to rattle off a list of the party's successes after we're done playing, and reinforce the variety of actions, tactics, and...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

I think you've hit on it well, again with the bolded in particular. On the one hand, my players and I do just enjoy that intrinsically, and going along with world/scene description (which can have some overlap with framing, but not inherently), it lets us all cohesively imagine and embody...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

I really appreciate this consideration, especially the bolded, because it encapsulates well the reaction I had way upthread to: The idea of having no permission to speak outside of those categories as the GM gives me hives, and makes me feel like I do/will run these games incorrectly/poorly to...

Coen Brothers - The Movies and the Ranking!

I have gotten unreasonable mileage out of "That don't make no sense!"/"It's a fool who looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart." And call my dad the Paterfamilias a fair amount as well.

Coen Brothers - The Movies and the Ranking!

I've actually been working my way through them chronologically, True Grit is up next. So, as I have them on Letterboxd, with an asterisk for the ones I'm guessing where they'll land, ascending. 2 Stars The Ladykillers - I was honestly surprised this actually lived down to the poor expectations...
