I've never played at / run a table that wasn't 4D6-L placed. The only variation I've personally seen is where I recorded everyone's results from that method, and let the players choose whichever one of the generated arrays they liked the most.

Honestly, I think they're written out less because of their actual use, and more because people would be frustrated/upset if such an apparent aspect of the character didn't have official mechanical codification, even if they'll almost never outshine an actual weapon. That said, I have, on...

Or figure out how to leverage their skill with weapons in a way that can ground the creature. Or exploit their physical prowess to hang on to it while still being an effective combatant. Or many other mundane approaches.

This is actually exactly the crux of my personal uncomfortableness with it. I find the exact opposite, that the bolded are folks who these sorts of spells primarily do get used on, people who are otherwise relatively innocent bystanders, or at least, people you normally wouldn't take violent...

Huh. I've never considered this before, but I'm actually kind of amenable to this as a solution here.

I voted for everything currently in the books, and adding Summoner and Witch. I do want most of the other options available, but many of them seem easily covered by subclass to me.

Or for that matter, that same conversation and result happening, just, as they are about to cast it for the first time instead of at level up.
