    D&D General #Dungeon23

It looks like my last post in this thread was back in February, made it about 13% of the way, so truly, congratulations to everyone who stuck with the whole year! I'm deeply impressed by the commitment.

D&D 5E (2014) DM imposed restrictions to the game (+)

The only active restriction I've placed has been on using the Blood Hunter. I know it's not technically first party content, but it shows up prominently on DDB, and I personally don't want to deal with that specific flavor. Past that, I haven't found any third party content that's bowled me...

    Unpopular Geek Media Opinions

The central theme of Christmas is family / found family / loved ones, and so, the core plot of Die Hard, and even some of the side narratives, all are quite reflective of the season, and why I argue the temporal placement is neither incidental nor fungible.

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

Rolling dice is fun. The tension of uncertain results and slowly parceled out release thereof is fun. The figuring out how to adapt your goals to the things beyond your control is fun. Seeing high numbers is fun, I won't deny that, but so too is seeing low ones, in the same way that some people...

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

I've never played at / run a table that wasn't 4D6-L placed. The only variation I've personally seen is where I recorded everyone's results from that method, and let the players choose whichever one of the generated arrays they liked the most.

D&D 5E (2014) Natural Weapons, How Much Value Is There To Actually Having Them?

Honestly, I think they're written out less because of their actual use, and more because people would be frustrated/upset if such an apparent aspect of the character didn't have official mechanical codification, even if they'll almost never outshine an actual weapon. That said, I have, on...

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

Or figure out how to leverage their skill with weapons in a way that can ground the creature. Or exploit their physical prowess to hang on to it while still being an effective combatant. Or many other mundane approaches.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

This is actually exactly the crux of my personal uncomfortableness with it. I find the exact opposite, that the bolded are folks who these sorts of spells primarily do get used on, people who are otherwise relatively innocent bystanders, or at least, people you normally wouldn't take violent...

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

Huh. I've never considered this before, but I'm actually kind of amenable to this as a solution here.

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

I voted for everything currently in the books, and adding Summoner and Witch. I do want most of the other options available, but many of them seem easily covered by subclass to me.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

Or for that matter, that same conversation and result happening, just, as they are about to cast it for the first time instead of at level up.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

Man, if I do absolutely know that someone used magic to influence my opinion of them, even if they treated me well, or didn't take advantage of me, I don't know how I don't have an immediate and strong negative reaction as a result. There's a reason the modern consensus on love potions is that...

D&D General The Crab Bucket Fallacy

I get that it's not the point, but hitting a baseball, at the professional level, thrown by one of the <1% best of pitchers to play the sport? By DC guidelines, on a human to human level, it probably should be around 25. It's kind of absurd that that is the baseline activity of that sport, in...

Grade the Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) System

This is from Starforged, so the language might be a bit different, but I do feel like the imagery is a nice and clear distillation of the mechanic.
