What are you reading in 2025?

That's Hardwired. Metropolitan is urban fantasy. The Hardwired sourcebook is fascinating. I wonder how many times an author has been so actively involved in bringing their fiction into the RPG world? I think there's a fine line between details that bring the world to life and just faffing...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

I really like Hodgson's Carnacki stories. One of the things that elevates them is that sometime it's a supernatural happening, other times there's a logical(-ish) explanation. That really keeps readers on their toes. The Jirel of Joiry stories are quite enjoyable! She's a striking character...

What are you reading in 2025?

I finished reading Williams' Hardwired. Third time reading it, and I think its influence was even greater than I originally thought. It's pretty much the ur-text for Cyberpunk 2013/2020/Red/2077/Edgerunners, much the same way Anderson's Three Hearts and Three Lions is for D&D. Now I'm reading...

Ozzy has passed. Pour one out for the Prince of Darkness.

I can remember being a kid and seeing the video for Bark At the Moon. It was the perfect mixture of cool, kitsch, and scary at that age. Black Sabbath is one of those bands that looms large over everything. Music, style, gaming. Just about all of us knew or were that heavy metal kid with a...

What are you reading in 2025?

A very good and salient point, that. I saw Benjamin Bagby perform the first part of Beowulf live, accompanied by a Saxon harp, and it was sooooo amazing. Nice. My mom read Beowulf to my brother and I before we could read. Blood and gore and everything. That's one of my earliest memories.

What are you reading in 2025?

Oh yeah...I would even go so far as to say "that a large portion of genre fiction is the equivalent of airport or beach reads, with the authors only seeking to entertain." Though of course, you can write to entertain AND still have something to say that's worth saying (see, as you mentioned, Sir...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

100%. Like, I get that people want their characters to survive. But when they get so very cautious and precious about it that they are essentially avoiding playing the game, I kinda wonder. Sure, we can play Peasant Crawl Classics or Cyberpencilpusher Red, where your biggest challenge is getting...

D&D General Have you ever retired a character?

Yes, particularly as we transferred from 1e to 2e. With 1e, we all had a bunch of characters we played. As 2e took root, it encouraged more focusing on a single character. So slowly, one by one we retired our excess characters. The one that's my namesake here, whom I'd been playing since he was...

What are you reading in 2025?

Same. I'm a fast reader, but these days I find a 500-page book daunting, and that after a certain point, they really need to work hard to justify that page count. I watched the Super/Man documentary over the weekend (would recommend it highly, but to say it packs an emotional punch is an...

Pirate Borg -- any of you scurvy dogs have it?

Repping my twin brother's itch.io page - he's done some Pirate Borg work. They're not on there, but he also does these neat bookmarks that have a small bit of mechanics on them, like a single monster or table to roll on. https://metamer.itch.io/

What are you reading in 2025?

The Incompleat Enchanter is a fun read. It's swashbuckly, witty, and light. But it also shows an understanding of a variety of folklore and tales. And hey, how many fantasy stories star a psychologist?

    General video game discussion

They also are adding the ability to change the weather and time of day during Photo Mode. Super excited for that. In my Cyberpunk Red campaign, I like to use game screenshots from time to time, and being able to customize the weather will be great.

D&D General Weapon Mastery - Yea or Nay?

Same. Weapon masteries and the expanded stat blocks on signature monsters in the MM did it for me.

What are you reading in 2025?

Looking at my original posts, I mentioned both subject and comprehension. Not every kid is the same when it comes to reading, absolutely. Heck, adults don't even have the same level of reading ability.

What are you reading in 2025?

I am late to the party, but am digging his work quite a bit. Maybe. I was a precocious reader, yet when I revisit books I read at that age, stuff went over my head. Not so much language and writing styles, but content and themes. At that age, most people lack the context and experience to...

What are you reading in 2025?

I finished reading PKD's Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said. Definitely a head trip to read, reflecting on how fast celebrity can fade, the dangers of a police state, and how easy it would be to fall between the cracks. I also read Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death. I feel like it hasn't...

What are you reading in 2025?

Absolutely. I grew up with books. Heck, one of my earliest memories is my mom reading Beowulf to me before I knew how to read. Yeah, I don't know that my parents were all that aware of the contents of the books we were reading. They knew we liked fantasy and sci-fi, so they just picked stuff...

What are you reading in 2025?

Looking at the amount of reading I was assigned in college, it was more than even I could keep up with on a weekly basis (and I was and am a fast, voracious reader). That's a sure recipe for ending up burnt out. I think the teacher can make a lot of difference. When I think about the books I...

Where’s The Deathstalker RPG? Part 2

Seeing a bunch of people in suits and masks instead of cgi is encouraging. I'm not sure what compels a person to reboot Deathstalker out of all the 80s fantasy properties, but I suppose it's better to remake something with issues than something that's perfect (not that that's ever stopped anyone).
