What are you reading in 2025?

I enjoy Lin Carter's work quite a bit. I also think that if you want to understand Conan's place in Appendix N, the Carter/De Camp stories are important reads, even if they don't always hit the mark set by REH's originals. "The Thing in the Crypt" was a direct influence on the Conan the...

What Is Your Go-To Pick-Up TTRPG?

As much as I think 1e Mothership mostly maintains the vibes and feel of the original, there's something to be said for how concise 0e is, how much it manages to do in a release that's barely much more than a zine in presentation and size.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Something being a problem for someone does not mean that the game itself is broken. Though, I suppose that's quibbling over semantics at this point. I think the difference is that OD&D fundamentally was broken. When I finally read it, I would have been hard-pressed to understand the game...

Exactly! If you want to write an RPG, write an RPG. I dunno, I think there's a line between someone creating an RPG and someone claiming to have fixed a game that wasn't even broken most of the time. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with modding a game. We all do it in varying...

Any time someone talks about "fixing" a game system, I kinda tune out, because most of the time I'm about to hear some person's glorified homebrew.

    D&D General Do THIS, WotC!

I started playing D&D at age 9. And I wonder, today, would I be able to understand the current edition of D&D well enough to run games at that age. I don't think so. Ever since the ending of the Basic line, D&D hasn't had a strong on-ramp for brand-new players.

What are you reading in 2025?

Lin Carter has the pacing of a Formula 1 Race! But I think it's important to note that he was a fan, and it shines through in his writing. It's not only that if he wanted more stories in a certain vein, he went and wrote them. But if you look at the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, he proved...

What Is Your Go-To Pick-Up TTRPG?

These days, I'm absolutely going to reach for Cyberpunk Red. I can grab some pregens and come up with a quick scenario in no time. If they were to specifically want a fantasy RPG, once I would've said DCC RPG, but I'm kinda in holding mode with that, waiting to see whether Goodman Games is...

What are you reading in 2025?

I normally am not that way, but every once in a while, I read a book that is so profoundly good, that I feel pressure as to what I want to read next. Normally, I'll gleefully move between modes and levels of quality. I can enjoy Lin Carter as much as Dostoyevsky (even if the latter is certainly...

What are you reading in 2025?

I finished reading Cameron Reed's The Fortunate Fall. That was a book so good that I was left struggling what to read next. It had so many layers to it, and one heck of an ending. I eventually decided on Philip K. Dick's Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said for my next read. You have to follow...

    General video game discussion

I just finished up Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. It was a fun game, though I think it would've benefitted from some sort of combo system for the tricks. What struck me is that in the entire game, you only kill a single person. Everyone else just runs away when defeated.

    Sinners (2025)

Despite waiting for streaming, I went into it only knowing that it was a vampire flick starring Michael B. Jordan and directed by Ryan Coogler. And it was so darn good. Easily a top-tier vampire flick for me. It's got style, great performances, great cinematography, great music, and a whole lot...

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 | Official Teaser

There are a thousand stories in Night City. I get why people want to see more of the season 1 crew (sometimes regardless of whether or not it's even possible), but pretty much anyway you slice it, I think you'd end up with a worse story as a result. Heck yeah - that and Idris Elba as Solomon Reed.

Who is your favorite James Bond?

Yeah, it's just not a cocktail at that point. I maintain that a martini requires at least half an ounce of vermouth. I generally go with 2.5/3 oz of gin or vodka to .5 oz of vermouth. For a dirty martini, I could see going as low as .25 oz to make space for the brine, but that's about it.

Who is your favorite James Bond?

I'm pretty sure that the difference in dilution between stirring and shaking is marginal, according to How2Drink, which I would defer to. The aeration, however, that is definitely a thing that bears mentioning.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 | Official Teaser

Is it too much to hope that this will quiet all the fan theories on how David could still be alive? Super excited for this. Seeing the designs in black and white also reminds me a bit of old 2020 art.

Who is your favorite James Bond?

Roger Moore, hands-down. These days it feels like all the superspies are brooding action heroes. Give me the suave, quippy Bond of Moore any day. Timothy Dalton probably looks most like what Ian Fleming described in his books, if I recall correctly. Handsome, but somewhat cruel-looking. There...
