Agreed. It sounds like two different (understandable) spins on the same story: MW and TH fail to produce a manuscript in time. Wizards cancels the product. MW and TH offer to send it later, but by then it's too late. I don't know that for a fact, but it fits both stories.

I don't see any ambiguity. The spell does "3d6 + Intelligence modifier cold and fire damage.", and later "5 cold and fire damage". The damage is both fire and cold. Otherwise it would say "5 cold and 5 fire damage".

The Elf write-up also does not support this idea. We know that one race grants 2 +2s and one class grants no +2s, so it's reasonable to assume that races grant ability bonuses and classes do not.

We know hippogriff can be purchased for 1,000gp, so there's sure to be flight as an option. It's probably unsupported on the online tabletop, however.
