So we got the sheets, let's calculate the crunch!!

I imagine the Prof. number (we saw it on the war pick) is the bonus. So the Prof. number of the dagger is +3 and the mace is +2 (see the Human Cleric, who gets +4 on Mace and +5 on Dagger, +3 when Thrown).

WotC has a milking machine now (Draconomicon I)

You can't have your cake and eat it too. In one breath, you tell us a book on Gem Dragons is desired by many, and in the next you tell us many are sick of dragons. Those statements are probably both true - but no one is forcing those with dragon fatigue to buy anything. By your own admission...

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

How do they know what level he is? From the level of power he uses? You don't have to tell the PCs the name of the power, just describe its effects. Might they be able to guess? Sure. But that indicates a very high familiarity with the system - at which point, your best bet is probably adapting...

D&D 4E The 4e rogue: Good power names!!

I was hoping each category (at will, encounter, daily) for each class would have a different name, e.g. aura, smite, benediction for the paladin. However, that's clearly not the case.

    Class Training feats and obsolescence

I hope you're right. I think that's a great direction to take the game in - more options, but not the overwhelming options of a classless system.

D&D 5E (2014) What do YOU Want to See Next?

Paragon path Ritual I would say magic item, but I doubt they're much changed, and I would say character, but I imagine we'll get some after D&D XP. As for Design and Development articles, I want one on multiclassing.

    Rename Thievery to Roguery

Dex-ter-i-ty. You can just spell the word out. As part of the "Text Generation", I'm unimpressed.

4th Edition and the Immortals Handbook

1e Lolth had 66hp. These numbers are only meaningful in relation to one another. In 4e, a pit fiend has 350hp and a 25th-level rogue 146hp. You'd still complain if the pit fiend had 750hp and a 25th-level rogue 292hp - even though their stats wouldn't be 'wussed out'.

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

But if I remember correctly, they said that every rogue got it as a bonus feat - which they don't here.

PHB classes -- why does it matter which ones are included?

    1) You cannot simply convert a campaign over when 4e is released because many characters will be impossible to create. 2) Some DMs play core-only games. 3) D&D already has a high investment just in the core books - extra splatbooks cost even more, especially if you're only interested in one...

& Sneak Attack: Skills and Proficiencies

The same way that in 2e they went from "Problem: Non-Weapon Proficiencies are lame" to "Solution: No NWPs". I don't see how you couldn't split up some of the skills if you really wanted to, or even reintroduce skill points. It would be hard, but not too hard - every time it says Athletics...

& Sneak Attack: Skills and Proficiencies

We don't know if Int has another use yet or if (I hope this is the case) you can choose any skills with your bonus skills from Int. It's unlikely the rapier was removed. More likely, it is too powerful to give away for free and instead needs a feat. There has been a reform of the weapon...

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

I thought that was the new name for the ogre mage, acknowledging its roots.

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

For those who are interested, I statted up a first-level elven rogue as best as I could. 28-point buy. Elf Rogue Level 1 Medium mortal humanoid (elf) Initiative +4 Senses Perception +3, low-light vision HP 26; Bloodied 12; Healing Surges 8 AC 16; Fortitude 12, Reflex 16, Will 11 Saving Throws...

& Sneak Attack: Skills and Proficiencies

I for one would prefer all ability scores to be useful for all characters. The cunning, clever rogue is a fairly common archetype.

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

In 3.5, you could 5-foot step to avoid opportunity attacks. But what if I wanted to make a monster that could 10-foot step? I'd have to say, "This monster can move 10 feet with a 5-foot step". Now I don't have to say that, I just have to say "This monster can shift 2 squares". Much simpler, much...

Except the rogue is not proficient with the rapier, it seems.

    Getting Players to Create NPCs

Those are some great ideas. I'll definitely have some parameters outlined before we begin, and I'll let the players sketch out parts of the map and add to the history if they're interested. I'm thinking also of giving limited veto to the players and myself, so we can control what sort of...

    Getting Players to Create NPCs

For my new campaign, I want all the characters to come from a small, primitive village and I want them to have close ties to the NPCs of that village - I want the players to design many, if not all, of the NPCs. Do people have advice on how to approach this? I'm thinking of index cards with...
