D&D 5E (2014) Followup on "Everyone Starts at First Level"

Thanks for the update! I've always preferred this type of play, and I'll be very happy if you find that 5E supports it.

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

I voted "other" because none of the things I like about 4E were mentioned. I liked the cosmology, especially the fey and shadow planes, or whatever they were called. I liked the "bloodied" status. I liked the alignments. I liked minions and solos. There were some things I thought were good...

From the really crappy classes to being the most awesome way of flavoring it?

Well, I'm going to cheat a bit because this was me and not one of my players or DMs. I had a boring 'ol dwarven fighter, either in 2E or very early 3E. I decided he was going to be the dwarf Indiana Jones and was able to get pretty close to what I wanted mechanically. A dwarf's natural...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell slots or spell points? Which do you prefer and why?

Spell points for me. I like my games to reflect fantasy literature, and spell points fit a lot better with the rationale for magic's limitations in most books, the two most common being that casting requires effort and you can get too tired to cast, and that you have a limited amount of magic...

Are Knights and Cavaliers the same thing?

"Cavalier" is the slightly anglicized form of "Chevalier" which is just the French word for "knight." So in real world terms they're exactly the same thing. I can see using both classes, translated to whatever version, if you want to model different orders of knights with different training...

D&D 5E (2014) Hit Point Recovery Too Generous

This gets back to the old, old, old argument over D&D as war vs D&D as a sport. I prefer the latter, so the quick hit point recovery in 5E bothers me. However, in this edition they included a superior tool for D&D as war. If I were to tweak the rules, I'd probably use the exhaustion track...

D&D 5E (2014) Can a Battlemaster pickup a disarmed weapon as part of his action?

With the rules as is, I'd say yes, but that's to make up for another deficiency in the rules. I object to the idea that the defender should be able to pick it up easily, which the rules say he can. If you're in combat, you're moving around to avoid being hit and defending with your weapon. If...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs: How Old Are You?

The objective definition for Grognard is "Someone more than 10 years older than Mishihari" So no, you are not a grognard.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the point of gold?

Nuts, you beat me to it. And he who dies with the most gold wins.

    D&D 5E (2014) Vicious Mockery: the Mockings

One of my favorites comes from Piratecat's story hour: You are an embarrassment to dragons everywhere!"

    D&D 5E (2014) Low magic player characters in D&D 5e

First idea to pop into my head: casting a spell of any level does the caster 5 hp in damage. First level PCs generally won't want to pay that price. For higher level PCs it won't be a problem. I would probably make rituals an exception too.

    D&D 5E (2014) XP per Session !!???

The DMG recommendation sounds really fast to me too. After thinking about it about, though, while I wouldn't use this in previous editions, it may be alright with 5E. I liked slower progression in previous editions because once you hit a certain point, either the levels are sort of capped (1E)...

First Edition Feel: Why Is This a Good Thing?

Here's a few of the things I liked about AD&D: 1) Success through clever player actions 2) Gary Gygax's writing style 3) Resolving social encounters without dice 4) No obsession with mechanical balance 5) Initiative system 6) Spell casting interruption 7) Fantasy elements based on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Old Edition "Keepers" (Books)

I built some built-in bookcases in my home so I can keep everything out. But my top picks would be Wilderness Survival Guide, Dungoneer's Survival Guide, Monstrous Compendium, AD&D DMG, Manual of the Planes.

D&D 5E (2014) can warlocks be good guys?

A warlock can certainly start off good. There are plenty of stories in fantasy literature about the guy who thought he could use evil for a good end but ended up corrupted. Staying good while your patron is trying their darndest (I had a better word here, but, you know, grandma) to corrupt you...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

My interest in 5E is pretty good. AD&D is still my favorite edition, but 5E comes close. I was looking through the PHB last night and getting excited about some character ideas, which hasn't happened in ages. My only real gripe is with the initiative rules - I've never like 3e/4e style...

I'd pay big bucks to see that in the movie theater though.

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

For me that would be about as dull as playing a shooter in god mode. Doesn't matter if I get hit, doesn't matter if I screw up, I'm still going to finish the level.

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

It's fun to feel like you earned your level. Having levels given to you is not fun and feels lame.
