D&D 5E (2014) A running list of questions from a new player/new DM. Other n00bs please feel free to add in.

If it's that big a deal to him, I'd be inclined to let him generate his own character. I don't see a compelling reason to use pregens that's worth the risk of souring him on the game from the get go. Assuming you can get your other players on board, I'd allocate the first half of the first...

D&D 5E (2014) My group is questioning everyone.

Your players want to interact with NPCs rather than killing them all? There are worse problems to have. Seriously, this is a good thing. Don't punish them for it. In your place I'd roleplay the captured NPCs until I got bored with it. After that, I'd tell them "You're questioning orc #384...

    D&D 5E (2014) Speed Factor Initiative Modifiers

First: Yay! I love AD&D style initiative. 3E's initiative was my biggest disappointment with the system. It made combat downright boring compared to previous editions. Second: I don't have 5E yet, so I can only speak to how I've played it previously. Third: The DM should decide at least...

D&D 5E (2014) A running list of questions from a new player/new DM. Other n00bs please feel free to add in.

This wouldn't work at all with my group. We had one player who use to do things like rolling his die over and over (just for fun, he said) then when he got a good one he would say that was his attack roll. There's too many ways to play games with it, so we just went with roll on your turn...

D&D 5E (2014) Why are vague rules praised?

Rule clarity is useful in an RPG, but agreement of resolution with game fiction is even more important. Precise rules tempt players to apply them literally in situations where common sense says they should be overruled. Leaving them a bit vague encourages DMs to apply them as appropriate to...

    Is that their own galaxy?

I always took that to be metaphorical. Like someone now would say "I've been from one end of the Earth to the other." Now Earth doesn't even actually have ends, but anyone would understand that he just means "I've been around, seen a lot of things ..."

    Expensive Movie Nights

Drive ins are fun with kids or a group. The kids can run around when they get bored with the movie so I don't have to be the quiet police. (Mine are 4 and 6 so this is important) For groups, you can chat with your friends during the show and you're far enough from your neighbors that it...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do royalty die in D&D?

Assuming a vanilla D&D campaign, they're murdered. Take Forgotten Realms, for example. There's enough magic available to someone "wealthy as a king" that normal causes of death just wouldn't apply. Old age, disease, normal injury, "mostly dead" (within raise dead scope), and poison all have...

    Problem players

Very good advice here from the other posters. The only thing I have to add is give the guy the benefit of the doubt. He may not realize his behavior is disruptive until you talk to him about it. As an example, I once tried to simulate a very low wisdom in one of my PCs by doing or saying the...

D&D 5E (2014) Best disposal of body or item spell!

Now I'm imagining a place deep in the Ethereal Plane littered with all of the secret chests lost since the spell was invented. That would be a fascinating place to loot if it could be found.

    D&D 5E (2014) New DMG Excerpt: It's A Trap!

I'm surprised there's no comments on the picture yet. I can't believe that guy's sticking his hand in there with all those warning signs! This is what you call evolution in action. A smart adventurer would be using his 10 foot pole.

D&D 5E (2014) A wizard with a "Boots of Elvenkind" using inivisibility spell

I would allow perception, just make it harder. Someone with tracking would be be particularly able to notice that there are tracks, but they indicate someone is still there. For others, grass or dirt would be depressed where the character's standing. An npc with very good perception might...

    D&D 5E (2014) Diagonally Questions

For me, 1 Assuming both are right handed, enemy cannot attack player but player can attack enemy. RL Medieval fortifications were often built with this in mind. 2 Yes 3 I'd improvise some kind of contest of strengthf

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

The OP is Jan '05, so I'd count it as a 9 year 10 month necro, which very nearly makes it epic. It's easy to do this by accident with the "related thread" links at the bottom of threads. I mostly don't mind necros, but I'd love it if they were prominently flagged as such so I don't...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's on your psionics wishlist for 5E?

Do you have the references for that? You got me curious enough to google it, and the references I found imply it was coined by noted sf author John Campbell in 1952.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does the club do d4?

While either one can kill you, I'd definitely take the baseball bat. A hit on a limb with a bat will break the bone. A similar hit with a dagger can easily kill if it hits an artery. It all depends on where you get hit.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does the club do d4?

As one of the weakest weapons it makes sense that it's at the bottom of the list. No sharp edge, no point, no spikes, no great weight, very little reach, no great speed. The only thing I can think of that would do less damage is darts.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's on your psionics wishlist for 5E?

I would just like to see 5E psionics follow the (few) books where psionics was done well in fantasy books. Of those I've read, that only includes the Deryni books and the Witch World books. If they can't manage that, then I'd strongly prefer not to see them at all. No SF or modern themed...

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Hit Question

See if you can find the old Rolemaster tables. That will certainly add some tension and excitement.

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternate ability generation rule

I like the 3d6 in order, change one to 14, method proposed. It preserves randomness, it lets you choose a class to be reasonably proficient with, and it's dead simple to use. Another bonus with a method like this is that it lets you filter out prospective players that aren't going to fit with...
