    D&D 5E (2014) Neuroglyph's "30 Minutes with Mike Mearls" Interview

I think that's a pretty good insight. Assuming you're right, the 5E strategy is much better. An RPG is never going to be a better MMO than an MMO and trying is a losing proposition. I don't honestly understand how there's a debate about about WoW's influence on 4E. At the time4E came out...

High and Low Stat discrepancy and opinion

My thoughts, in no particular order balance is overrated if the DM and/or players don't want to abide by the dice, why on earth are you rolling for stats? it's a one shot, so who cares?

    D&D 5E (2014) I'll make my own Fifth Edition.

The conventional way is great, but isn't quite "ensuring." Nothing in a free market is sure because everything is open to negotiation. "Ensuring" implies governmental force.

    D&D 5E (2014) I'll make my own Fifth Edition.

The OP's economics argument is deeply flawed. Just for starters, the three rule books are $150, which at the federal minimum wage of $7.25 will take you about 20 hours to earn. So you can take an extra part time job at McDonald's for one week and pay for the books, or you can put in who knows...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D on CNN

Seriously? This is not how we encourage the press to promote our game. :(

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D on CNN

I should've added that I saw this on the front page, right along with unrest in the Middle East and the latest tech gadgets. Someone there thinks it's important news. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D on CNN

CNN is printing stories about D&D ( linky!) and they're not even about crazy people. Does this mean we're meanstream now?

Would a typical D&D town allow adventurers to walk around?

I'm reminded of a plotline from Schlock Mercenary. The protagonists had a mission to extract some data from a computer system at a city library. When things went south, the authorities put out a bid for someone to come take care of the "terrorists" at the library. The main characters accepted...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill challenges in 5e - Math help!

My favorite rules set for something in your "Action" pillar is Hot Pursuit for chases. To design something else for action, I suppose I would see if I could start with the framework of Hot Pursuit and go from there.

Would a typical D&D town allow adventurers to walk around?

This makes me think of feudalism. D&D characters of mid level and above are basically superheroes. Even a large group of common men at arms don't have much chance of stopping them, and losing men in a medium sized regular town hurts. They aren't really replaceable - losing them leaves...

PCs that are too big for their britches...do they live or die?

Kill'em. Or whatever is in character for the BBEG. I never had this problem, probably because my players knew exactly what I would do.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Cosmology

I wish they'd kept 4E cosmology. While I have a strong dislike for 4E in general, I thought the cosmology was one of the things that was really cool about the game. I can work with this though. The kept Feywild and Shadowfell, and those were my two favorite bits.

D&D 5E (2014) Any authors you think should be in Appendix E but are not?

Patricia Wrede, Talking to Dragons et al. It's a good example of how you can have goofy magic, a slightly wacky setting, and still have an awesome experience, which is very D&D to me. Lloyd Alexander is a nice inclusion. Some of the best book I read as a kid, but I haven't heard much of them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sleeping in armor

The key question for me, which I don't see addressed here, is "In medieval times, did soldiers and knights sleep in their armor?" I know we have some folks on the boards who could answer that. If they didn't then I would like to see a mechanic to encourage sleeping without. Otherwise, no.

    The Dumbing Down of RPGs

The point I was making that it used to be that most games were made to provide an appropriate challenge for people like me who had a lot of play experience already. That's not the case anymore - there's a lot more very easy games made now than hard ones.

    The Dumbing Down of RPGs

Video games in general and CRPGs in particular are obviously being dumbed down over time. I think it's a case of trying to be accessible to more players. As an illustration of how this works, take me. I've been playing video games since Space Invaders came out, so almost since the beginning...

D&D 5E (2014) Wizards Banned from Armor (Your Fluff Wanted)

Here's a simple one: iron is resistant to magic. Casting with more than a few pounds of iron on your person causes a disadvantage or other mechanical penalty. A dagger is okay but anything more than that and you have a problem. Iron armor then also provides extra protection, but you need more...

I just noticed that when I mouseover moderation threads, I can see part of the first post with the mouseover preview popup feature. Thought you'd want to know.

Thoughts on the way I run my game.

Definitely not my cuppa tea - I prefer more Black Company than Justice League - but if this is what your players like I don't see any reason not to do it. I'd guess that the biggest challenge is going to be keeping track of all of a character's abilities. I've had players in a high level game...

How balanced should a game be?

Yes on matching the tone, but as I was saying the preference for tone varies a lot. "As realistic as possible given the fantasy conceits" is one of my tone preferences. You're happy to give up realism/verisimilitude for balance. I'm not, and I suspect that the others arguing the point with...
