Travelling through a wormhole in space

Thanks for the overview - I wasn't aware of some of the older stuff you mentioned. With that in mind I will concede that the focus of research on the dark matter theory is not as unreasonable as I had thought. The danger of self-directed literature search is that it's tough to get even a good...

Travelling through a wormhole in space

I'll admit I don't have a complete idea of everything done in the field - that would take more time than I have available - but I'm not exactly a layman either. I have been a professional researcher in the past and I'm pretty familiar with how things go, at least in my domains of knowledge...

Travelling through a wormhole in space

That's pretty much my take on it too, except I don't mind if people think I'm saying "scientists are stupid." Well, maybe foolish rather than stupid but that's a fine point. Making up some magic unobserved thing to explain why your theory is right even though it doesn't match physical evidence...

D&D 5E (2014) What class really is the "jack of all trades"?

:eek::eek: :eek::eek: Yikes! Yes it's obvious what you meant but somebody had to say it.

Head transplant - wait - what?

I remember that one. An old guy transplanted into a young woman's body. He had a heckava time adjusting as I recall.

Head transplant - wait - what?

Sounds like a Larry Niven novel. It also sounds out of reach with current technology. We can't even graft someone's own broken spinal column back together, much less attach it to someone else's

    D&D 5E (2014) What solution for blind character ?

This reminds me of something that happened in my first group. I was DM. The party cleric had managed to get himself blinded by a carnivorous ape, as a combination of a grapple, some bad luck, and a custom critical chart. I wasn't terribly concerned because I remembered he'd gotten an item not...

Travelling through a wormhole in space

That seems an odd way to approach the problem to me. Instead of looking at just one improbable thing, wormholes, you're positing two, wormholes and parallel universes. It would seem simpler to work with just one unproven impossibility/improbability at a time. But then, I'm not a physicist. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) "My X is underpowered compared to Y." So?

I've been playing and involved in RPGs since 1980, and while people did talk about damage comparisons back in the day, there was nothing like the current obsession with DPS in RPGs. Since, based on my admittedly limited circle or gaming friends and acquaintances, it didn't come from us old...

    D&D 5E (2014) "My X is underpowered compared to Y." So?

Too many good posts here to XP, maybe I'll come back later and get some more ... It's a WoW thing. I used to be really into it, and I can tell you that the forums explode if one class or spec gets 5% ahead of another in DPS. There are enough people that play both WoW & D&D that the mindset...

Film remakes and reboots and adaptations

A new Starship Troopers movie? Maybe even a good one? You just made my day. Thanks! Edit: I just read the articles you cited, and I thought it was hilarious that US critics took him literally and criticized him for it. I thought it was a really bad movie with an offensive point, but at...

Film remakes and reboots and adaptations

That's an understandable choice. Not the one I would have made, but defensible. The post by trappedslider a few down suggests another possible reason. If the original story was about bugs and not powered armor, then if the director had to choose between them it would make sense to go with the...

Film remakes and reboots and adaptations

Assuming that all of the is true without researching it myself, then the man is an idiot at least twiceover. First, for not entirely reading the book his movie is supposed to be based on, and second for completely missing the message of the book. The message is not "war is glorious" it's...

Film remakes and reboots and adaptations

I perceive remakes, reboots, and adaptations as very different things, and this affects my tolerance for each. I generally don't bother to see remakes. I've seen this story already, not much point in seeing it again. I'll make an exception if the original is amazing, like anything by...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition has broken Bounded Accuracy

That's a lousy approach. It sounds like your group likes to play maximum combat challenge D&D. Well and good. You're actually tailoring your approach to their preferences. But if your players focus, frex, on undead-fighting abilities and you decide to plan a campaign with with no undead in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

Overall, 5E is my favorite D&D since AD&D, so I find little to hate. The short list of things I dislike: Rest / hit point recovery take attrition of resources out of the game, for the most part Initiative - 1E/2E initiative was a lot more fun The ritual system seems underdeveloped Would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Missions and Moral Compass

That's a very good point, but prepping two different adventures, one of which I know I'm not going to use, is entirely too much work. If I could be very confident they'd turn the job down, this would be an interesting twist to the standard "adventure starts by being hired for a mission" trope.

I might need some serious sociological advice with a D&D game

I have just a few bits of advice, and they're based on my 16 year old nephew who has Asperger's and whom I've known well for many years. I'll call him Bob here, but that's not actually his name. Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm assuming he's a typical example of Asperger's, which may or...

Conversion of First Edition Weapon Attack Adjustment Table for Fifth Edition

I will be interested to hear how it works out in play. I liked the idea in 1E but found it too cumbersome to use.

    D&D 5E (2014) Missions and Moral Compass

I don't think this has every happened in one of my games. Part of my job as a DM is to come up with adventure that both the PCs and the players will be excited to undertake. Proposing a mission that they emphatically don't want to do would be a pretty spectacular failure on my part.
