Can an Illusion of Cats Damage a Rat Swarm?

You realize that now that you've found them, they have to kill you and everyone who's seen this picture, right? Daniel

Moderator's Note If you think there are historical inaccuracies, you're welcome to discuss them: I'll ask (but not demand) that you do so with at least as much specificity as the post to which you're responding; I ask that because I don't think there are historical inaccuracies. Please don't...

Can an Illusion of Cats Damage a Rat Swarm?

A rat is not an object. (And yeah--you gotta watch for those Disney ninjas. They're so sneaky, I can't even find a picture of them on Google images!) Daniel

[Dread] Jenga beat up my dice! My results from the indie horror RPG.

As we played it, if you bump the table (or shout "LOOK OUT!" at just the wrong moment) and the tower falls, you're the one that gets it, not the person making the pull. I missed the advice from last month on multiple pulls at once; that makes a lot of sense! Daniel

June - What are you reading?

I just read my first O'Brien recently, and it was pretty great. My wife is a huge fan of the series. If you like that, here are a few others you might enjoy: -The Count of Monte Cristo. I've heard it called the best adventure novel ever written, and if it's not the best, it's pretty close...

Too much character makes TS ARGHHH!!!

YOu didn't tell me you were in an office! You should have told them (once they had finished their action of looking at you), "I'm thinking outside the box!" It should have taken you one minute to finish the phrase. Talk about promotion material! Daniel

    Political Topics in a campaign

Not to be snarky, but one of their primary issues would be their lack of a franchise :). Given that your medieval society has fireballs and raise dead spells, I suppose I can accept a voting populace--but the issues they'll have will depend on who has the franchise. Is it similar to modern...

Too much character makes TS ARGHHH!!!

THACO was a brilliant improvement over 1st Ed. As awful as it was, at least you had one number to remember, not twenty. And then there was original D&D, in which your running speed was six feet per five seconds. Get up from the computer right now and try running six feet in five seconds...

Too much character makes TS ARGHHH!!!

Aw, c'mon. Where's the love for the to-hit tables and for the magical properties of gemstone table (which took about three pages of text and had no in-game effect whatsoever)? Daniel

Can an Illusion of Cats Damage a Rat Swarm?

I'd definitely let it work. It's cool, and the scent thing seems like a red herring to me: animals frequently respond to other sensory inputs (e.g., because something is downwind from them). If it worked every time, that's really not such a big deal, IMO: it's a highly-specific "save or die"...

Recommend five (and only five) fantasy books

Most of mine are duplicates: A Wizard of Earthsea: poetic, beautiful, unlike most fantasy novels; Ged kicks Harry's butt. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell: hilarious, complicated, dry, exciting. Perdido Street Station: Freaky, dark, intense. The Phoenix Guards: Also hilarious--it's even...

    OotS #462

Was Xykon's line about having a shot at the prize a direct movie quote? I coulda sworn I'd heard it somewhere, but the comic's not loading for me now, so I can't google it. Daniel

June - What are you reading?

I love The Scar, can't stand Starship Troopers, and think a Saturday morning spent with Calvin and Hobbes is just about perfect :). This morning i just finished reading The Well of Lost Plots, a book by Jasper Fforde that's a slapstick absurd murder mystery set in about two dozen famous novels...

The most important people in the world (my players stay out)

Heh--pretty similar to my idea! Kragath, elder xorn loremaster/alienist/wizard who specializes in the study of dying planes. Because she did not leave one such world quickly enough, she now can exist only within the confines of a complicated geometric structure (when you look at it, by the...

    Lloyd Alexander, Rest in Peace

You won't regret it, I think. The Book of Three is pretty lightweight children's fare, but as the 5-book series goes on (I don't think The Foundling is properly part of the series, even though it's in the same world), they get pretty complex and often seriious (though never humorless). More...

    Lloyd Alexander, Rest in Peace

Lloyd Alexander died May 17 at the age of 83. He survived his wife by fifteen days, his daughter by seventeen years. And his Prydain Chronicles remain among my favorite fantasy books ever written. Rest in peace, Mr. Alexander. Daniel
