I like Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved and there was always at least one Draconic PC race so I think that helped me warm up to the Dragonborn. Tieflings have been around as a PC race since 2e AD&D so that never was an issue for me.

Truth be told I liked 2e AD&D with Skills & Powers. It gave more character customization to the PCs but still kept things fairly simple (IMHO) for the DM. If you throw in Combat & Tactics then the combat of the game is for the most part the same as 3e. :)
