Do you know you're a bad GM?

Let me think... My worst attributes as a DM: Control - In another life I played/ran Storytelling games and developed a taste for in depth character background and development. As a DM I have a habit of insisting the same from my players. I have recently come to realise that not all players...

Do you know you're a bad GM?

That is a tough question... I've had players tell me that I am too controlling but others that tell me that they had an absolute blast at my games. I think a GM can be "Bad" to one player and "Good" to another. Obviously the type of game is a factor... does the player want a sandbox game or do...

4e "getting back to D&D's roots" how?

I have to agree with all of the folks who say "Ease of Running".

So how many different game systems have you tried?

I never kept count but then again there would be too many to name. I guess I am always on the futile search for the perfect system. :uhoh:

    Sacred cows: Where's the beef?

    1) Character stats not being based on a score between 3-18. 2) Classless roleplaying. If they got rid of classes and instead allowed players to choose abilities from a menu. 3) If to-hit rolls were no longer based on the roll of a d20. Those things would pretty much tell me that D&D has gone...

    Our Civic Duty

This is not a political thread... I just thought that this was a kinda neat video put together encouraging people to go vote no matter who you like. They ask that you send it to 5 people but I don't believe in chain letters so I figured that his was a great place to post it so several people...

Flavour First vs Game First - a comparison

WOW!!!! This is an extremely long thread... no way that I can sit and read 29 pages of discussion goodness. :) Re: The original post. Very good points... I also prefer a flavor driven game. From your post we are very much in a Catch 22. If a game is too open with the rules then the classes...

DM's are Producers, Players are Consumers

It depends on the game and the group. I've had some games where I've had to force feed the players the whole story. The players only came alive during combat. The plot of the adventure was only filler between combat encounters. I've had other games "sandbox style" games where I could sit...

Name one thing you love and one thing you hate about 4e D&D

Love: Simplicity. It is much easier to run than 3E while offering more options that 1E or 2E. Hate: Still runs too much like a tactical miniatures wargame. The rules pretty much assume that you will use minis and maps.

Does a definitive Map/tiles program exist?

Another vote for Dundjinni... I just picked it up and I love it.

Must Own DVD Movies That Define The Fantasy & SciFi Genres?

Look at the OP's question I think we keep listing our favorite movies but are they actually turning point or definitive in the fantasy/scifi genre? For Example: While some comics are more popular and sell more issues I would say that DC's launch of the Vertigo line represented a turning...

Must Own DVD Movies That Define The Fantasy & SciFi Genres?

I think pretty much everyone has listed the same movies that I would with one exception. I really liked the David Lynch's Dune. Yes... I know it wasn't as good as the book, truth be told most movies aren't. I thought Dune had a look and feel all it's own. Edit: Oh yeah... I forgot to add The...

    Cyberpunk RPGs

You could always do d20 Modern with the d20 Future and d20 Cyberscape add-ons. Personally I'd just go with Cyberpunk 2020. You can't get better than the real thing. http://www.talsorian.com/cpindex.shtml

    Alternatives to "Save the World"

Make the best of a horrible situation... :) That is pretty much the premise of the Midnight Setting. The BBEG has already won and it is pretty clear that the defeating him is outside of the scope/intent of the setting. Instead the PCs are supposed to pick their battles (figure of speech, not...

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

We'll have to agree to disagree there. True, it was a wargame first but the setting is so rich that it almost screamed for a roleplaying element. In a lot of ways role-playing in the Battletech setting is very much like playing in a setting based on Dune. 1) In both cases you have the great...

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

I couldn't agree more! Though I love the setting I believe that Midnight suffers from it's own Metaplot. It is almost too heavy handed... it is hard for the PCs to believe that they can make a difference in the setting when the intent of the setting is that the PC will never be able to defeat...

Does Metaplot ever work? Forked Thread: Greyhawk 4e

I can think of an instance where the metaplot advance helped a setting... Battletech While I loved the original Succession Wars setting the introduction of the Clan Invasion was much needed and made for a much more interesting setting. I loved that there was no clear cut good vs. evil. Both...

    Now Is This A Promise?

To the OP... Why not just wait and see if it is ready on day one? If it isn't you know there will be plenty of people coming to vent on ENWorld and thus you save yourself the frustration. I plan on signing up but not until it has a had a few months for the web developers to work out any issues.
