D&D 3.x 3e/4e as Operating Systems: An Argument for Grognardism

it is possible many gamers aren't necessarily going to miss the v3 system as much as what has been built around it and the OGL. players and dm's enjoy being able to pull any idea from thier hoops and messing with it and posting it. personally, that is what will be missed most. since all the...

    What Will Happen to Greyhawk?

gotta back you up here. keeping greyhawk just leaves the door open for more products and rerelease of old and popular products like the modules. living greyhawks is on wizards now, no it obviously isn't dead. oh yeah... blackmoor rocks. a living blackmoor rocks harder.

so you wanna be an assassin?

hey brazeku, this poison sounds cool. real cool. details please? and rossik, as far as assassins and magic, we have both in our game, but your meaning is clear. at the very least they should have published versions of both. oh well, guess a lot of supplements covered that for us.

    why orc pc?

touche!!! was hoping someone would catch that!! no, there are a tonne of really good dm's out there. but when meeting players and dm's from other groups, it is clear that many dm's just don't think a lot of things through. caveat: it is thier game, thier way. but, the method mentioned before...

    a wizard says what?

not a noob question at all!! the fault lies here. should have explained that. "vancian" refers to a class of wizard from a book series (no longer remember the titles). this was likely the first example of wizards in novels having a spells per level type thing happening. sorry bout dat!

    a wizard says what?

almost forgot something in that last. if you are running a different method, what sorts of classes do you employ in your games? do you even have spellcasting classes? players are welcome to put thier two cents in here too!!

    a wizard says what?

it is probable that many of you still use the vancian method of spell casting in your games. our group hasn't used it in years. are there any other groups who use other methods? what method do you use/prefer? have you found one method or another adversly affects gameplay (not necessarily...

so you wanna be an assassin?

exactly. have often wondered how many gamers/groups introduce the law of consequence for action. we allow assassins (anyone who kills for money or ideals). we allow all versions of prestige classes (spell using and non spell using). have also wondered how many gamers/groups run games where the...

    what hath been wrought?

this is a question mostly for fellow dm's. what is your policy on artifacts? do you allow them, and if so to what extent? can characters create them and if so, to what extent? are you willing to kill, maim, burn, torture, mislead, trap, reduce or reward characters for having/using artifacts...

    trippin' around the cosmos?

in our game, offworld travel has been fairly common (over the course of years). have any of you had trouble reconciling differences between worlds (spellcasting differences between krynn and toril for example)? how often do you convert literary world into "D&D terms"? is it worth the effort...

so you wanna be an assassin?

just wondering. have any of you given any thought to the subject of assassination, as it fits into the larger context of the game? we run things a bit differently in our group. you see, many years ago, we tripped upon an aspect of the job noone ever seems to consider. assassination targets...

    why orc pc?

the smartest dm's will REQUIRE players to periodically play evil pc's. what madness it this? how dare funkysnunkulator make such proclaimation? easy. players and dm's both forget "evil creatures" are evil. they get treated as "standing around waiting for heroic pc's to come collect thier...

    The Killer Dungeon

dunno. we run a fairly serious game in our group. every dungeon can hit like a wrecking ball if dm plays properly. as written, nearly every module has all the necessary ingredients to take down even the most prepared party. liberal use of the following theories: a single goblin driven by...

How long are your weekly rpg sessions?

our group has been meeting 3-4 time weekly for many years. sessions usually last until the alcohol runs out. actually, our group seems to go for about 10 hours with intermittant food/drink runs. stores are nearby, music is good, space is plenty and knifefights are common. ooops. was that last...

    Division of Treasure

it doesn't matter what method you use, as long as you remember that no matter who says what about the "inequity of the situation", there are built in solutions (the game has provided them). for example, dividing equipment according to appropriateness. swords to fighters, staves to wizards etc...

    Prophecy needed.

it cries, the one, at once sky and sea it vies, the sun, many places be it buys, the one, the souls that don't see it flys, the sun, that bears hidden key it ties, the one, the courtier to tea it tries, the sun, to rise from the souther it lies, the one, at command of the mother it dies, the...
