    D&D 5E (2014) MM Excerpt: Bone Devil

Actually, that made me do a double take. I've never used one in 3e, in which they're flightless, but a bone devil was the first creature I ever faced in 1e (yes, really) and it could fly then. Tricky critter. The new art is very good but makes the beastie look too draconic for my taste. Thanks...

D&D 5E (2014) DungeonScape (formerly known as Morningstar)

Thanks for coming here to talk to us, Hobo. That assurance almost sells me on it (even if I never get around to running 5e). The only hint of fly in the ointment is this, from your FAQ: "At the moment, we’re only slating offline play for tablets (iOS and Android). We’ll be looking at solutions...

D&D 5E (2014) How many of your campaigns ACTUALLY ever get to 20th level?

In campaigns I've played (1e and 3e) never. In campaigns I've been DM (1e, 2e and 3e), still never. I look forward to running campaign that goes higher than 12th-13th but the reasons none have so far are: TPKs Almost TPKs Groups breaking up because of new jobs, moves, families.

[Ptolus] Overland travel from Dohrinthas to Ptolus

Well, they could travel up river to Slune and then head east-northeast. That looks to me to be around three hundred miles, give or take. Alternatively, they could head east along the coast first, looping around the Vantaran Peaks and visiting three or four cities along the way. Depending on the...

    D&D 5E (2014) All-Access Pass Possessors, I Implore You...

It's all that rolls of my tongue after an evening of beer and hot dogs set alight with Dave's Gourmet Insanity Sauce.

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

While the full 5e core (folks, don’t flame me; you know what I mean) have yet to appear, I think you have the right of it. From the goodwill and publicity generated by the open play test, to the free basic rules, to the first impressions of the PHB, I think the launch of 5e is going as well as...

The double standard for magical and mundane abilities

A fair point but one that others have already taken up in this thread, so I will return to my lurkdom for the time being. Oh, but before I do, I'll tell you what; even taking into account my sporadic attention to this forum, I don't recall seeing a thread quite like this before, despite it...

The double standard for magical and mundane abilities

They might. Then again, rules and guidance have appeared that call for wizards to make concentration checks in environmentally extreme conditions and certain combat situations as well, so I'd query your use of the word 'never'. Will such things appear in the full 5e? Dunno yet but I wouldn't be...

D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

That's just mean. Then we couldn't all just copy and paste our earlier posts.

The double standard for magical and mundane abilities

First of all, I have to repeat my usual disclaimer. The acronym 'RAW' is intellectually bankrupt, although I am sympathetic to posts that use it (including yours). The reason why it's bankrupt is because implicit in it is the idea that the rules as written are somehow divorced from the rules as...

D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

Paizo was competently catering to WotC's audience long before any part of that had a grudge against WotC. To suggest the company's subsequent success has therefore been primarily the consequence of a grudge held by some fraction of that audience is nonsense. Incidentally, I do not play...

D&D 5E (2014) Halfling rogue sniping from the the second rank

I understand that intent. I just think it's a little too contrived. That contrivance has given rise to this whole debate, after all. And MM's reference to 'common sense' hasn't helped either. A clearer yes or no would have drawn a line. His equivocation will, I suspect, fuel several more pages...

D&D 5E (2014) Halfling rogue sniping from the the second rank

Isn't the problem here that the fact there there is a debate at all is indicative of the rule being a tad silly in the first place? I'm an average height human male but someone three feet tall (or thereabouts) standing behind me would not be hidden from view from anyone standing five or even ten...

    R.I.P. David Trampier

He was one of my favourite RPG illustrators. Whenever I recall the excitement of delving into the PHB for the first time back in the seventies, it's David Trampier's illustrations that I visualise - especially that magic mouth on the spiral stairs!

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Clearly, we will have to agree to disagree. Not so. The argument concludes not that the consequences are desirable but that they are in fact the consequences.

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Sorry, I thought I was clear. Of course you can use Gate to call creatures who can cast ninth level spells. My point is that doing so is a far cry from using a ninth level spell to cast another ninth level spell. I have repeatedly pointed out that MotP (to which I assume you refer) was...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

What fun! I think there are two points here. One is that the MM and other sources contain creatures that grant wishes partly for players to benefit or try to benefit from. The second is that when it comes to granting wishes, it behooves the DM not to simply facilitate an instant infinite wish...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Me too. Just not easy, as you go on to explain. If I were in your game, I would be happy with your ruling, even though it is not identical to mine. Mine is that you can't use Gate to snaffle a noble djinn from the Elemental Plane of Air, for the reasons I give upthread. The noble djinn who were...
