I ran a conan adventure recently with 4E. And allowed alot of weapons to crit on a 19-20. Thinking It wouldn't make a huge impact, as there were no magic items. The longest combat lasted 4 rounds!

So far my 4th edition combats have lasted 4 to 12 rounds, with each encounter averaging an hour real time. Although this is largly based on heroic tier play. 3rd edition(with the same group thats playing 4e) used to last 1 to 10 rounds, with each encounter averaging 1 1/2 hours.

This may depend on what sort of monster the party is fighting & party composition. With the party I'm Dming for at the moment. I found that if a monsters hit points are more that 25 per level. The I know the parties going to have a tough time bring him down. So either i shave so hit points off...

I totatly see where funkytable is coming from. The only reason I get to play any F2F DnD is the players come to my house. Otherwise it would be online DnD or nothing. And if I was just four months into it, and wizards yanked my source of books, i'd feel pretty miffed.

I'm in the process of trying something similar. I'm using action points rather than charges. And you can use an action point to recharge a power. So far it seems to be working.

Its not clear from your message as to whether you like 4E mechanics or not. If you do , then changing, racial abilities, classes, feats and skills to suit your own needs is fine. If you don't I think your better off sticking with 3.5, and trying to add elements of 4E you like.

One of the fundementals of 4E is that monsters get different rules to PCs. So there's a conflict. You want world logic that governs evrything. That doesn't mean you can't achieve what you want. You just may have alot of difficulties doing it.

The parties got two strikers and two leaders, and no controller. So they should do well vs solo or encounters with only a few monsters. Try minions and skirmishers in numbers. Higher level monsters to make it more dangerous/harder. Also consider terrain /tactics that separate the party up...

Secrets of Saltmarsh is one of my favourite modules to run. And I agree droping some of the ecounters is the way to go. One of the other things I had in mind is combining some encounter. 2 or 3 close encounters in a 1e dungeon might work, but with 4e , it might be better if they we're combined.
