Forked Thread: City Demographics - building to inhabitant ratio?

Magical medieval city says it should be about 2 people per structure, even in the metropolis it only goes upto to 3 people per structure. A typical small city would take up 100 acres, have roughtly 5000 buildings, and a population of 10000.

Why do you keep playing 4e?

There's a different answer if i'm a DM or a player. As a DM, as Piratecat put it "I'm having a blast" I enjoy Dming 4E much more than 3E. I'm at present converting Conan to 4E for my next campaign, and just converting it is fun. Rereading the books, amd thinking I can do that with 4E , is such...

    A Low Magic 4e Idea?

I don't think you are missing anything. I'm at present converting 4E for a Conan , and it seems to convert pretty easily.

    Fantasy Novels and D&D

Like a lot of people who started with 1E. I went through the bibliography in the DMG just to read what inspired Gygax. The modern day equivalents. JV Jones Robin Hobb Jim Butcher. Paul Kemp (my favourite realms author) Terry Goodkind

    Why do 4e combats grind?

I remember some 1E combats grinding. The difference IMO is with 4E you get a combat you know the outcome of, but still takes you 3 or 4 round to finish.

    Why do 4e combats grind?

4E combat is very movement orientated. So by not having terrain objects (pits etc) to push people into your combat options become more limited and therefore grindier. Agreed. Although from my groups point of view. I get more grind as a DM than they do as players. I've been giving my players...

    Why do 4e combats grind?

I don't believe grind is related to combat length at all. But more to do with finishing a battle that the party are confident of winning, but takes a few rounds of hacking away. Ways I avoid this. I use a critical hit/wound system. So the longer combat the more chance of rolling a critical and...

Into The Fire!--Contrasting Analysis of 4E and 3.5E

The rule books would be obselete. The adventures wouldn't. With 3rd edition converting old adventures , especially at high level, was difficult for me. While with 4E it easy to convert 1,2 or 3e adventures to 4E. So why I like 4E, encounter design makes Dming a pleasure.

Which edition would best fit my playing style?

Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game seems to me the best of the list. However E6 which is just a sawn off version of 3E , would be a zero cost version if you have the 3e rules.

Which edition would best fit my playing style?

As your all ready familar with 3rd ed rules, I'd say E6 is the best fit. 4E would probably be an improvement on 3rd ed for you. However it isn't a perfect fit.

    Wounds/Conditions rules

I've seen quite a few house rules regarding wounding and conditions(broken limbs etc). But not much about when and how they should occur. The two obvious choices are criticals and massive damage cause wounds. Any other options?

Help me reduce the No. of rounds/encounter

I've only seen this with monsters that are solos , elite, and some brutes. Have you considered what type of monster this situation occurs with?

What do you want to see from 4E Publishers?

A setting. Kingdom of Kalamar looked interesting. And if nothing else comes out, that will be my next campaign.

    True Critical damage

The system i"ve been using is a form of condition track. Where if a character is bloodied or goes to zero hp, after the encounter they have to make a first aid check or take 1 point critical damage(one point on the condition tracK) Whatever the condition track is at, is the PCs penalty to hit...

Dungeons & Dragons Editions: Where Do You Stand?

I voted 4E, but the real answer is 4E/3.5/E6 & D20 conan. I would never go back to earlier editions. The 4E rules are terrific but I dislike the core setting. To the point where I wouldn't play 4E if I had to play core setting/rules only. 3.5 is a fine set of rules that i'm happy to use. I just...

D&D 4E Any tips for speeding up the game? 4e is slowing me down!

There seem to be two issues here. The length of the round and the number of rounds. IMO the length of the round in 4E is much shorter, but if your finding it a problem there seem plenty of ideas in this thread. The number of rounds is a more difficult problem. There does seem to be a lot of...
