    Challenge Levels

I found myself, both playing and DMing. That around 4th and 10th level, party tactics have to change. And what was working before at lower levels, doesn't work. So if your giving your players lots of low level games, their tactical thinking may be stuck on low level. To try and help them. Try...

    By Crom!!

Part of the problem with being truer to the books. Is the strength of the books is Howards writing, rather than the hyborian world.

Fiddling with the standard special maneuvers

Have a look at the Book of Iron Might by Mike Myers. It deals with how to create special attacks/maneuvers . And its a realy excellent book.

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Darkness Spell: What's the Point?

As shadowdewler pointed out. It is easy for the caster to turn the darkness on and off. To avoid rule lawyering , i'd rule it that the darkness doesn't effect the caster when targeting outside the darkness. Although I perhap the spell might be better as the 3.0 version.

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Darkness Spell: What's the Point?

The best use for 3.5 darkness, is to cast it on your self. You get 20% concealment.

3rd Edition Rules, 2nd Edition Feel?

I'd split this into two areas. DMs and players. Stuff like CRs and wealth levels , are all DM stuff. The players never need to know what it is. They give the DM restrictive rules, that constrain the imaginination. 3E DMing by the book is a step backwards. Its trying to turn the DM into a...

3rd Edition Rules, 2nd Edition Feel?

Those are all DM mechanics. A good DM doesn't need rules to balance the game. I found there's a tendancy to just crunch characters . Even players who think about a character, don't link the character to the stats. They just maximise the numbers.

    Shadow Conjuration

Greater shadow conjuration could duplicate Monster summoning V, and summon a part Illusionary Shadow mastif. I certainly think that because the illusionary part is made up from shadow magic, it should be a lot harder to spot as an illusion than if a fiendish creature was summoned. And unless...

    Shadow Conjuration

Yes shadow conjuration can be used to summon monsters, and shadow monsters are on the summon monster lists. Remember any monster summoned via shadow conjuration is part illusion/shadow. So summoning a shadow monster is already a more powerful use of the spell than normal.

Making Melee Characters Useful at High Levels

In addition to the above comments I'd add Check the barbarians damage bonus. High level melee characters often can hit alot, so there damage per hit is critical to their sucess. The players should have tactics to defend against tactics such as grab or trip attacks on their characters. How...

What issues should a new group settle up front?

When i've tried that. I get one player answering, and the rest saying I dunno. So we go with the one players choice, and leaves after a couple of months. And i'm left running a game that nobody choose. Since then, all the players input or none. The other aspect that always seems difficult is...

Help wanted: Spellcaster Tactics (my players -- out!)

You should add more potions and scrolls to his possesions. Why have brew potion if you don' t use it. As mentioned above you need some metamagic prepared spells. Quickened fly ,polymorph , fireball , magic missile and spectral hand are all good. Plus use maximased and heighted for scroll...

    DnD Ecology

My problem with this type of thing is the players frame of reference. You always have to work with something the players can relate to. So everything boils down to its like australia, and thats if they notice.

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

IMO with a standard tactic your trying to employ, moving into the room straight away shouldn't be standard. And when you do move in, leapfrog moves , one character had ready actions, the other moves forward etc. That way you don't need to change the rules. As to the suggested feat. Any stealthy...

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

With that sized group your always going to have problems moving to gain maximum firepower/attacks to bear. What might help is a better mix of weapons, espeically reach weapons, that you can put in a 2nd rank, behind other characters.

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

I'd agree with this. Although I don't think Hussars Idea of 2 standard actions is very overpowered. Just curious , why do you feel the need to move into the room? Why not fight from the doorway? As long as you can see the enemy, you can shoot them. Plus they can only come at you one at a time...
