One of the things I loved to do with 3/3.5 was play characters that have the similar attributes but different classes. I find with 4E , the class mostly determines the abilitiy scores.

The extra damage for crits is a good point. Not sure about lowering monster defences.

I've used maptools with Ventrilo , skype, and without voice chat. With either, speeds up, and its more like a F2F game,more socialable. While without , makes for better roleplaying, and can be alot nmore atmospheric. Beween Ventrillo & Skype. There wasn't much to choose between. Both worked.

Why do people want to play drow or dragons, or half dragons or dragonborn? Or if you tell them to pick a standard race from the PHB, they want something nonstandard. I don't see the appeal or understand.

I love and hate sub races. I see some sub races and think its just an excuse for some cool powers/abilities. On the other hand I love gold dwarves from FR. They we're still dwarves , but broke the stereo type.

The pirate was pretty much rogue, dropped sneak attack though. Thief was similar to rogue. I took away sneak attack, and gave them hidden attack instead. To encourage more thief style combat , some one more confortable putting a knife in back, rather than a stand up fight.
