D&D 5E (2014) Cleric: Darkness Domain - comparisons and suggestions.

The Shield of Ineffable Darkness and Shadow Spawn combination seems way too overpowered for a multi-class character. If a rogue drops 2 levels into cleric, he can use a reaction to blind an opponent who hits him, then have advantage on his next attack. Since he has advantage, he gets to use his...

D&D 5E (2014) Most fun of these three Monk Subclasses?

I have very little experience with 5e monks as yet so I won't get specific. However, my general advice for any question like this is talk to your DM to see if your character concept will work with his campaign and with what the other players are playing. If your DM has a very specific campaign...

    D&D 5E (2014) Killed Me a Lawful Stupid Paladin

While I agree with a most of what you're saying, I take issue with this. It's one thing if a DM leads PCs into an unbalanced encounter, but in this case it sounds like the PC picked a fight he couldn't win. I don't think it's the DM's job to make sure PCs don't suffer the consequences of stupid...

D&D General Which edition had the deadliest dragons?*

1e dragons underwent an overhaul after some believed that they were too easy to defeat (and in 1e you could subdue a dragon rather than kill it). I can't remember which issue of Dragon magazine (but I'm pretty sure it was in Best of Dragon Magazine #3) had the article, but it added wing buffets...

    D&D 5E (2014) It's official, WOTC hates Angels

I think they hate Tennessee's professional football team. I mean, their mascot was in the original Monster Manual, but is nowhere to found now--I mean as an actual entry, not just a title attached to another creature.

    D&D 5E (2014) Glyph of Warding

You just need to be able to cast plane shift to get back to your home plane after you cast your buff spells in the glyphs. Glyph has a 1 hour casting time and demiplane's duration is only an hour. Although you can re-cast demiplane to get back to the same demiplane you've created (and filled...

D&D General Help me with a nautical Halloween adventure: Becalmed near a ghost ship

I think the key to making it spooky is to make the players feel powerless. A ship stuck in the middle of the ocean certainly starts them down this path. Throw in rapidly diminishing water supplies (most of the water barrels are mysteriously turned brackish? and the crew starts circulating rumors...

D&D 5E (2014) How broken would it be to let people always spend a bonus action to make an off-hand attack, even if they didn't use an Attack action with a primary?

Mechanically it might not be OP, but as far as flavor I would hate this rule. The idea of a wizard casting a spell and then stabbing somebody with a dagger just seems "wrong" to me. But then again, I'm a grumpy, old Fatbeard.

    D&D 5E (2014) I need help

Yeah, I kind of gave up on trying to be realistic with darkvision a while ago. In 1st and 2nd edition it was pretty much like passive night vision (i.e. you could detect near IR), now it's a supernatural ability to perceive your surrounding even if there isn't any sort of EM radiation present. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternate Ranger

I've never had a problem with rangers choosing favored enemies or terrain that don't work well with the campaign. I'm of the mindset that the DM should work with his players when they make choices like this to ensure their choices aren't wasted. If the player says he wants to choose a terrain or...

D&D General Pet or familiar for a hunter of the undead?

It all depends on what you mean by hunting undead. I think a dog would be a great thematic choice. In the real world we have cadaver dogs that can sniff out dead bodies even if they're underground. There's also a fairly common trope that animals can sense ghosts and the like. It seems likely to...

    D&D 5E (2014) I need help

I would respectfully disagree. Being invisible to darkvision is a HUGE tactical advantage--so big in fact, I've know DMs who consider it overpowered. This is especially true when you consider how many powers depend on being able to see the target. As far as being surprised, if you can get your...
