    How many levels?

How many levels should 5e have? Thirty, twenty, ten?

D&D 5E (2014) 5e needs to push its IP instead of churning out splatbooks.

The goal of WotC is to bring in the old gamers, and I think that supporting settings like Ravenloft and Dark Sun right off the bat would earn them a lot of good will with those players. They can write new stuff, too, if they want to; I just think that the 3e/4e strategy of shoveling out...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e needs to push its IP instead of churning out splatbooks.

D&D has always done the "generic fantasy" thing, but "generic fantasy" is pretty bland, especially with a million d20 clones out there. High quality writing and a solid setting will help sell books. (Just look at Exalted or Dark Heresy. Total piss for mechanics, and yet they have legions of...

    RPG Codex Interview w/Mike Mearls

I was shocked and disgusted when I read the interview. Sick to my stomach, I closed the web browser and rested my head in my hands. It felt like I had been punched. When Mike Mearls said that 4e was largely modeled after MMOs, he was merely stating something I had suspected for years but...

    Mearls' L&L on non-combat pillars

The introduction of social skills was the worst thing about 3e. Well, aside from the changes to spellcasters.

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster Creation in D&D Next

It's interesting to me to note that they are trying really hard to make big creatures dangerous. In 3e, a creature's damage really depended on its Strength score and its level (which let you Power Attack), whereas in 4e, a creature's damage output was largely determined by its role (so you could...

    Specialist Fighters

Yeah, I'd like to see something like this. In a perfect world, it wouldn't rely on movement in the way 4e abilities do. I've actually thought about this myself, and here is what I was thinking. Combat Guardian Your combat style focuses on defending your allies and crushing those who would do...

If they're serious about "flatter math," then WotC needs to deal with ability scores.

For those who want more variance between skill rolls, I think I would suggest keeping ability score modifiers the same (10 is +0, 12 is +1, etc.) but only apply half your ability score modifier to attack rolls and you can apply the whole ability score modifier to skill checks.

    Five-Minute Workday Article

    I don't see the fifteen-minute workday as a problem.

If they're serious about "flatter math," then WotC needs to deal with ability scores.

This is actually how it worked in older editions of D&D.

If they're serious about "flatter math," then WotC needs to deal with ability scores.

Problem: The difference between an 18 (+4 modifier) and an 8 (-1) is five points. This might not seem like a big deal, but it is. You're looking at a 25% difference in hit rates, which is pretty ridiculous. Some solutions: • Reduce ability score spread (ability scores might range from 12-18...

    Yet another take on AC

Please, God, no "armor as hit points" mechanics. Not in the core game, at least; save it for a module that no one will play because it is a horrible system. Things I don't want to do in D&D: • Track two separate hit point pools. • Repair my armor constantly. • Drag around eight suits of...

    Yet another take on AC

No. No. No. No. To elaborate on why this is all "no": First of all, the AC system you suggested is not AC. It's a system, one that is probably quite workable. But it's not how D&D has ever worked and it adds another layer of complexity to the game. Second of all, scaling defense is...

So it's the old "Edition War" excuse to dismiss people?

4e has objectively better production values--it's a much cleaner layout than previous editions of D&D, and its artwork is much higher quality. Doesn't make it a better game, but what Tony Vargas said is true.

So it's the old "Edition War" excuse to dismiss people?

Well, that certainly sounds better than "edition slapfight." That's fair enough, but I'm not sure we'd be covering new ground. Most of the flaws of 3e and 4e are well-known; it's just that people are unwilling to admit flaws in the system. I mean, you have people on the Paizo boards who...

So it's the old "Edition War" excuse to dismiss people?

I think describing a game as being "persecuted" may be a bit too much. Like what? I'm curious to see how 5e turns out (and I certainly hope it is a product that I want to play), but at this point, I think it might be better if the brand died out for a few years and was sold to a company who...
