Best Starting Equipment by Character Class

Now that the Magic Item Compendium is out and everyone's had a bit of time to digest it, I thought this thread might be amusing. Rules Unless stated otherwise (see format), equipment should be race/build-neutral. Equipment goes by standard wealth for a starting level character as presented in...

    Diplomacy and Taking 10

You can take 10 but you can't take 20. Rogues get Skill Mastery, by the way, which allows them to take 10 even while distracted or threatened. If you twinked it out enough, you could reasonably ensure that you could pull it off in combat without a roll. You'd need a really high Diplomacy mod...

    D&D 3.x Monk 3.5

Because you cannot take a 5' step in any round where you've taken any kind of movement already. Now if they've just attacked without moving, maybe.

    D&D 3.x Monk 3.5

Not if they've already moved. And I don't think you can take a 5' step undeclared in reaction to a held action. Whiff!

Decipher Script to Encode a Message

This seems like a simple enough thing to adjudicate. Just make it an opposed Decipher Script check. The person who encodes the work sets the DC. They can create a key if they want. Anyone with the key can decipher the code without a check, but it'll take them just as long as if they had had...

Which Diplomacy Rule Do You Use (if any)?

Straight-up core. It's simple and useful. No mind control effects from talking to people. Just a check to see if you can change their attitude.

Always wanted to fight/Never want to fight

I want to explore an alien Aboleth city. So very much. I don't want to fight stupid "trick" monsters like the rust monster.

If it helps, the official D&D FAQ file backs up the use of that feat for the monk.

Help me run Curse of the Mummy's Tomb!

Second session exploring the tomb... ...and Lucien Silverleaf died. He got et by the scarab swarm, when Lorana chucked a rock into the room and caused them to attack. Whoops! This is my first PC death as a DM. I let the player roll up a new character. This time, he's making a duskblade...

A Creature Level Adjustment Question for Your Enjoyment

Oh, I realize that. The loss of HD is devestating, and LA gives you nothing to effectively make up for it. That's why I'm a fan of the LA buyoff option. But I'm talking about this for lower LA monsters, not for stuff like vampires where it really breaks down. Consider knocking off the racial...

Paladin's mount can't wear armor? What am I missing?

Barding doesn't require a feat or a proficiency for animals to use, as far as I can tell. And if a DM was sticking your magical angel warhorse with attack penalties because you put barding on it, I'd suggest spritzing her with a water bottle and saying, "NO!" in a firm, loud voice.

A Creature Level Adjustment Question for Your Enjoyment

Yeah, I don't see the problem with it. ECL = HD (whether from monster "level" or from Classes) + LA CR has nothing to do with ECL. So if you knock off the racial levels all you're left with is LA. I think that's fair.

    Newbie Character Advice: Paladin

Lots of attacks and hitting things and smiting evil. Being mounted's cool too, but I'm not interested in maxing it out or using a lance or anything. As far as the party role is concerned, I'm one of the main tanks and one of the party healers (doubling up on both roles with the Druid). I'm...

    how to search better...

Don't forget that you can hire a rogue. It won't have 100% loyalty like cohorts and the like do, but you can get it right now rather than waiting for a level-up. Don't forget that spellcasters can use detect traps, locate object, knock, and the like to great effect. If it's cutting back on...

[Star Wars] Saga Edition's New Damage System

I'm with you up to the point of not wanting a consolidated condition track in D&D. I'd love the simplicity of that, myself. Then again, I'm just really getting into D&D so I don't have years of experience with the system with which to have familiarized myself with all the myriad conditions. :p

[Star Wars] Saga Edition's New Damage System

S'what it sounds like to me. I don't personally see that as being very Star Wars. Straight-up hit points fit better in my opinion. Hopefully it'll be as easy to rip out the condition track (at least as far as damage is concerned) as it is to insert massive damage into D&D. i.e. completely...
