Racial Paragons: What do you think?

Yes, I like them, especially for races with power issues (e.g. flight) or to enhance characteristics that make a race interesting. I do think that they are extremely hard to balance, given the spellcasting progression assumptions of 3.5E. I think long progression chains are, however, a very...

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

I can attest to PF being friendly with 3.5E supplements. I am currently running a 3.5E module and the rough spots have been minimal.

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

I strongly agree with the second paragraph and I think the +3 sword forged by the giants of old is kind of cool. But I admit that one ft he things that attracted me to E6 was the low power of the magic items. This reduces the Christmas tree effect (leaving only the flavorful strength booster...

Metaplots - it wasn't just TSR that did them

What I liked about the Traveller meta-plot (or at least much of it) is that, in space, events can happen far away. The GM can decide how muich influence they have. Perhaps the Spinward marches is under a strong governer who is staying neutral in the succession crisis so the characters see...

Time for a new Players Handbook

People vary in their tolerance for errata. However, I agree with you that the amount of errata is getting beyond the easy to keep track of. (some people have a higher tolerance than I do). While the decision to use errata is at the group level, it does create confusion over time. The last...

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

Okay, you are right, +2 weapons require a caster level of six. Gauntlets of Ogre Power; CL 6th But other stat boosters: Amulet of Health; CL 8th So, using the core magic item rules, you can't create most stat boosters. I saw this as a major advantage as it limited the Christmas tree...

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

One of the limiting factors on gear in E6 is the caster level of 6; you can only get so many non-expendable items and the bonuses are not that high. IIRC, you are limited to plus one weapons and only one stat booster (strength) that fall under the cap. So I'd expect players to seek to use...

TSR, WotC and Electronic Support: a loveless marriage

This is my experience as well. That included some articles that looked really interesting but were painful to browse (the font is too small for full screen to be an option with any reasonable computer monitor). Doing both PDF and HTML options wouldn't be tha hard, would it?

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

Perhaps this is my transformation to grognard but the real change seems to have been towards systematic errata instead of ad hoc patches (in which each group worked out it's own set of solutions). I found this approach awkward with Star Fleet Battles and it stays that way with D&D 4E. I...

Pathfinder 1E Are there any plans for a Pathfinder "basic"?

I'd be delighted by such a development as well. No real expectations except that anything that makes it easier to introduce players to the hobby is extremely worthwhile!

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

I must admit I had a very different experience than you did (with the Elf F/MU and the ranger). It is true that multi-class characters were good but careful enforcement of the rules made spell casting a lot trickier to pull off. You needed that fireball memorized (and it was lengthy to do so)...

    Becoming a Grognard

Hmmm... That is a tough definition. I think of myself as a Grognard due to my edition preferences but I am dubious that I'd meet this definition. I see the D&D version as at least partially being a preference for older versions of the game over the newer ones.

Yes, this would be a neat product.

The frakkin X-Mas Tree Effect: How to minimize it's impact in play?

Magic items being sources of great mystery and power would be fine. But you see the disposable items as well as the Christmas tree effect in modern D&D games. Stormbringer was unique and a great item (and clearly helped define Elric). I think I'd like a system where items grew in power with...

Why is the original red box so special

Me too. I think I had the AD&D PHB first, but this is the set that taught me how to play the game, admittedly poorly. The low level range (1 to 3) was a feature, as well, as D&D performed very well at these levels and you got used to the game before seeing the complexity of higher levels.

Thinking of returning to AD&D 2nd ed... Advice needed.

The longer I play RPGs, the more that I think that the art of creating good splatbooks is a very difficult one. The benefit of new rules and options needs to be balanced against the cost of a larger volume of rules. But I have had good luck locating used 2nd edition books and think that it is...

    Trailblazer - Thoughts, reviews, recommendations?

I own a dead tree version so I am sure that they exist. It was definitely worth reading -- I did not agree with all of the ideas in the book but it was a very coherent attempt to refine the 3.X D&D engine. My favorite part was the inclusion of a magic rating (analogous to a Base Attack...

When/If should Prestige Classes be introduced?

Me neither; I like options (a lot) but fear that the prestige class system went from being a "special way to make a character special" to an :advanced class system". It's one of those ideas that is very cool in conception but seems to lead to more problems in practice than one would expect.

At What Point Does PF Become Its Own System?

This is a very good point. My test is that you could mix and match the material from the two systems (which is currently possible). But it is true that 3rd edition AD&D evolved and changed a lot over the lifecycle of the edition and the final years felt very . . . different than the earlier...
