Essentials and the future of D&D

Didn't one of the editions of Neverwinter Nights support a DM? Even if not, the forst one definitely had a create your own adventure aspect that at least tended in the direction of moving the table-top experience online.

Are Casters 'still' way better than noncasters after level 6?

I have never had success with this in the 16 to 20 level range. If I set encounters hard enough that the wizard feels weakened then he'll hide. Sadly, this tendency was only encouraged by the one case of a brave wizard we had (he was also rapidly a dead wizard). A deadline only works if the...

Pathfinder Converts: what non-PF 3.X stuff do you typically import?

Agreed. It is a good thing to have many options but too many options can make a game difficult to run effectively (if, for no other reason, the need to have a hand cart to bring all of the required books).

Is full casting full casting, or is arcane > divine?

I think that this is a tough comparison. Clerics need to invest minimal effort to have limited melee ability and it would be odd to deliberately remove this. Furthermore, some elements of the build can make a big difference (what domains does the cleric have, for example, and are they able to...

WHy do druids and clerics get special treatment?

Fair enough. Even with that range, if we assume minor balance issue between casters (e.g. clerics) and non-casters begin after 16th level than they would be present for a very small portion of the adventure. That doesn't seem like it is worth a class redesign over!

WHy do druids and clerics get special treatment?

My experience of high level 3.5E play (let you know about high level pathfinder in about a year) is that full casters could dominate above 15th level (only), but this is highly dependent on campaign style and assumptions. It's notable that a lot of the adventure paths top out around here: Rise...

Are Casters 'still' way better than noncasters after level 6?

For very high levels, Quicken Divine Power (8th level) was a marvellous way of avoiding this. You couldn't get the extreme level of buffs up but it wasn't unlikely that the cleric had a free minor action in the first round which avoids much of this problem. The spell scaled rather well with...

Are Casters 'still' way better than noncasters after level 6?

Yes. But if you permit the printed (i.e. with online errata) Divine Metamagic (where you do not need the metamagic feat first), persistant spell and nightsticks (which are cheap to make) then a mid-level cleric can be fairly . . . impressive given that one feat investment. But I think that...

    3.5 or 4th edition?

Right now I play 4E and DM pathfinder. Both editions have strong points; although I admit that I am a bit of a grognard and so have trouble finding 4E combat to be interesting. It might be the inexperience of the group or the trouble of the medium (over internet). But trying both is not a...

    Trailblazer in a Nutshell?

I bought the print edition and I really liked this part (it was my most favorite part of the game, to be honest). I thought it really solved a lot of the issues with multi-class casters that were patched over by spells and feats in other 3.5 editions. While I am a huge pathfinder fan...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder and the ENnies

An impressive list. That's a pretty amazing level of recognition!

Pathfinder 1E Question on Effective Party Size in Pathfinder

Nice tip. It turns out that there were many groups that had trouble with the Quasit's incredible AC and healing. It also give me an idea of what the designer was thinking with the encounter so it should go smoother when we try again tomorrow!

    CoDZilla?

It actually took a lot of investment in 3.5E D&D to make a spell like Find Traps work. While the spell would let you find traps with a DC > 20, the duration was short (1 min/level), it would only work on the cleric and the insight bonus has half of the cleric's level. It wasn't likely to find...

Are Casters 'still' way better than noncasters after level 6?

I have played two major 3.5 campaigns (well more than one in each case but groups). In the first one we were nearly pure core 3.5 and I never saw the casters dominate. Usually it was the Paladin, of all things. Only in the last couple of encounter of the campaign (level 16) was that looking...

Pathfinder 1E What do you think of Paizo's Adventure Paths so far?

So far I have started DMing Rise of the Runelords. The plot has worked quite well and the plauers seem to be putting their own spin on the plot which is really cool. So far so good. I actually started subscribing to Paizo with Kingmaker due to good buzz and I have found that path to have a...

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

I freely admit to having both a 4E game (online) and a Pathfinder game. As I continue to see new Pathfinder products I become increasingly impressed with the production values and the quality of writing. While I agree that "success" is an arbitrary criterion, many successful projects have...

    [Gainesville FL]

It is looking like Pathfinder. We are planning our second session for Sunday if you are interested. Not sure what the ultimate frequency will be but I'd be delighted if it ended up biweekly.

Pathfinder 1E Question on Effective Party Size in Pathfinder

I have tried a module (Rise of the Runelords) and a 3 player party had some trouble. But part of it might have been the lack of a dedicated fighter -- that was also pretty likely to have contributed to their issues. I think it would have gone okay if I'd dropped the AC of the goblins by 2 or...

The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

I also suspect that the composition of the group matters a lot. A group of martial artists will have dufferent issues than a group of people who sail on weekends. Both will likely be a lot more exacting about things that relate to their area of expertise.

Rise of the Runelords: Difficulty Level (Spoilers included)

The characters were all built on an elite array. I think the rogue needs armor and that will help a lot. But the builds were pretty solid so far as I could tell.
