Rule Q: Dazed caused by immediate actions

What happens when a PC gets hit by an opportuntity attack that causes the Dazed condition? Does he only get one more action, or one total action for that round? Ie, if he moves first, then gets dazed, could he still get a Standard action (the one more action intepretation), or his he just...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

I'm not an adventurer. I just play one on Friday nights (well I did...now I'm back to trying to kill them ). However, I _am_ a player playing a game to have fun. Frankly, I don't think anything else matters. So, I can safely conclude that you would place yourself in the: "No, the DM...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

That was the whole point of the thread actually. My DMing philosophy is that my job is to provide an enviornment to allow the players to have fun. But that isn't necessarily what other people feel, and that's what I wanted to find out.

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

Absolutely. If we as players knew that we were about to get into what might be the 'big encounter' against something tough, we would have taken an extended rest. There certainly were a lot of extenuating circumstances. In fact, if I'd been rolling hit after hit after hit with encounters, a...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

Just to be clear, the stun-lock 3 encounters in a roll was a hypothetical situation, and did not occur in this situation. But what I did want to demonstrate is that by flatly stating that the DM should do whatever strategically is best, no exceptions, then logically, stunlocking 3 encounters in...

Planning to do the Tomb of Horrors...

It's not. It's a great adventure, and it does have some suggestions on upping the lethality of it, but it's not going to come close to the original in that aspect unless you alter it. No save and die traps...but there are fail-twice-and-die traps.

Adding roleplaying to combat heavy published adventures

A common complaint about WotC's adventures is that they're combat heavy. There isn't nearly as much exploration as their used to be (though that's improved in the new Tomb of Horrors). There certainly aren't as many puzzles. What I'm curious is what can be done about the lack of roleplaying...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

Beyond deciding to go through a portal without any idea what was on the other side, no we didn't get to choose the fight or not. The portal was also one-way, so we couldn't go back if we'd wanted to. We certainly didn't know we were about to take on the BBEG. I'm a Storyteller/Tactician to...

    D&D 4E Trying 4E Again

That pretty much summarizes most WotC adventures unfortunately, but lately they've been much better. As for combat length, don't worry about it. With only three players the combats will be going fast, and if you cut the number of monsters down instead of halving hp, it'll be even faster.

Essentials Line and HS series: It appears WoTC really is listening.

I'll be making a full review on my blog on the new Tomb of Horrors, but it also is indicating a substantial change on adventures from WotC. It's got roleplaing, it's got exploration, it still has cool encounters, it has combat encounters you can avoid, it has puzzles. It has easy encounters...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

No, I'm still around, and reading but I was starting to repeat myself and didn't have anything additional to offer. Actually, my sorcerer didn't even get the opportunity to get up. The sequence of events was: Solo slams sorcerer Unc. Sorcerer makes death save. Artificer heals sorcerer, who...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

Well, I'm obviously in the minority here. The DM definitely wasn't trying to 'screw' us...but the encounter as written was over-kill considering we only had 4 players (our 5th, and the defender couldn't make it that night). Ironically he was pulling his punches for the first half of the...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

Well, delaying for tactical reasons like that is somewhat outside the box for our group, we admittedly made that mistake.

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

Actually, just to clarify on the party composition...we _do_ have a Defender...but he wasn't at the game that night. We also had an Invoker, who was not able to do much hitting due to his rolling being as atrocious as mine. The irony is that I wouldn't have felt nearly as bad if my character...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

So, just to be clear... If you believe that the tactically smart thing to do is stun-lock one of the players for the entire combat...that's okay, despite the fact that that player is going to have zero fun at all? Let's then pretend it's the same character for all three combats in a session...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

That's actually what I wanted to do. Normally I would have thought that would require a Minor action, which was why I was waiting for my turn to try it...then never got to. I should have piped up regarding the possibility of a Free Action, but didn't do so.

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

Thanks for your response, though I could have done without the contempt. If wee'd thought about delaying at the time, yes, that would have solved the problem. However, that doesn't actually address the issue I posted about. I'm trying to go over the generality, not the specifics. This issue...

You make the call: Spreading the Pain

I've been playing the last couple of months, but will be returning to DMing this week. However, something occured in our last session that has raised a good question. For context, please look at: Arcane Springboard: House Rule: Stunned Now, beyond extenuating circumstances where the DM is...
