    Stalker0's Guide to Anti-Grind

Many of these tips are going into immediate use for me. Awesomesauce

Representing flying on the battle mat?

One thing I end up doing quite frequently is drawing side views of combats (to show PCs down pits, or enemies on the roof, or whatever). Gives you a good idea of lines of sight and the like. Works OK for fliers as well.

    Why DON'T you pirate?

Like most of the others, Ethics. However, I have no qualms at all about getting my grubby little hands on PDFs for which I own the actual book. Hypocrisy, double-standard, call it what you will.

    Let's read the entire run

Here's another article we had a photocopy of. We didn't really ever play "campaign" style where we'd level up from 1, so I can't comment on if the XP penalty was a fair balance for the overpower. I know that it was a popular one for our weekend long one-shots all through high school, since...

    Gamer opinion on RPG comics

Initial thought: I enjoy occasional inside gamer jokes, but I'd prefer not to be constantly barraged by them (Order of the Stick already does that).

DMs: what have you learned from PLAYING that has made you a better DM?

I should clarify this one a bit - I don't mean that it is a good thing to play for an hour less; I like playing D&D and more playing is a good thing, in general. The time that I eliminate at my tables is not D&D time, it is the non-D&D time where people are ignoring the game and talking about...

DMs: what have you learned from PLAYING that has made you a better DM?

The number one lesson I take across the DM screen is about pacing and tempo. When I am playing, and things are going slowly, I get bored. When I DM, I try to steer clear of things that will go slowly. I encourage players to proceed through their turns at a reasonable pace, and I discourage...

    Let's read the entire run

The first actual hardcopy issue I have is 119 which is pretty soon, but I didn't start reading regularly until about 190 or so. I'm looking forward to reliving my own start. :)

Dice bags - a few questions

My wife keeps promising to knit me a Klein bottle dice bag, but no results yet. I do have a hand-knit, felted bag with drawstring for my dice. It's roughly pear shaped, and about 3/4 of the bottom round part is full (the neck is empty). I have a couple of the small plastic boxes inside it...

    Let's read the entire run

Out of curiosity, how long does it usually take you to do an issue at regular speed? I've only been following on this site, so I don't know your actual rate. :P

    RPGA Scenarios Strengths & Weakness

To a degree. Another aspect of it is "Don't go into a vegetarian restaurant and complain when they don't have steak on the menu". If you believe in those labels (which I personally do not), the RPGA runs a game that tends way over toward the gamist/rollplaying side of the field.

    RPGA Scenarios Strengths & Weakness

To me these are the strengths and weaknesses of RPGA adventures (I find that there are other advantages to RPGA gaming in general, but I'll try to stick to just the factors related to the adventures themselves). Strengths 1) The ease of preparation and levelness of the playing field make the...

    Defeating my powergamer Glave master

In general: 1) You can't make OAs if you're dazed 2) You can't make OAs at hidden foes A couple of screw-job ways to deal with it I suppose. This might help a tiny bit, at least with teleporting foes (who shouldn't trigger Polearm Gambit anymore I think). Q: Where is the target of your...

    Let's read the entire run

I didn't realize these were so far back. This is another one where we had a photocopy of the article. They got used pretty heavily, especially the Illrigger. We were super-munchkins back then, so they must have been pretty brutal (although I don't really remember any details).

Hatin' the RPGA? (Forked Thread: The real flaw of 3E/3.5E/OGL)

Taking the analogy one step farther: I also don't think that Ford should completely ignore the input of drag racers, who can provide valuable stress-tests of engines and frames and such, that the normal driver would probably never experience or notice, but might need (a bit more desperately in...

Maps getting crappy now that "tiles" are used to make them?

My only real experience with WotC product so far is Living Forgotten Realms, which does indeed require Dungeon Tiles for all maps. Of course, this is a cheap and easy way to do maps for their "Free module every week or so" schedule.

    Let's read the entire run

I'm surprised at the lasting influence of the SF games in the magazine. I didn't really start reading it in any regular way until the mid-late 100s (the only access I had to earlier stuff were some article photocopies of races and classes and such), and I don't remember all that much SF...
