13th Age: what would you like to see next?

Well, 13 True Ways is out, at least in PDF form, and the Bestiary should start shipping in book form at any moment. These two books deliver new classes, new monsters, new items and lots and lots of backstory about the Dragon Empire. 13TW as much as promises an item-focused book of some sort...

13 True Ways and 13th Age Bestiary releases incoming!

Thanks for the info @Kender42!!! I'm excited about an annual. As much as I love books, they take a long time come out and I would like to see more regular updates of 13th Age material. I also think regular material would really help grow the player base. Awesome awesome awesome. I'm also glad...

13 True Ways and 13th Age Bestiary releases incoming!

The chapter on monsters is actually pretty good. This isn't a random grab bag of obscure beasties; these groups of monsters are well thought-out with lots of flavor text and story hooks. Several of the groups, notably devils, have tables of nasty extras you can use as needed. The monstrous...

13 True Ways and 13th Age Bestiary releases incoming!

That's a pity! I do remember hearing about that at one point and I was curious as to what they would do with that. At any rate I've finished Chapter 3, Cities and Courts. One of my complaints about the core book was that I didn't completely love the Dragon Empire, because it felt too...

Gnomes! (HUH) What are they good for? Absolutely nothing!

Hey, I am by no means setting myself up as an expert on all things gnome! I was mostly going off stuff people had mentioned in this thread + wikipedia. I will do an edit soon and incorporate Deities and Demigods and the Dragon article. Thanks for the suggestions!

13 True Ways and 13th Age Bestiary releases incoming!

Thanks! I just read (well, skimmed) the chapter on Multiclassing and boy is it a doozy. 13A multiclassing will not be for the faint of heart. The really, really short version is that you take any two classes and mash them together. You have to use class-specific abilities with class-specific...

13 True Ways and 13th Age Bestiary releases incoming!

I thought I would post some more thoughts as I was skimming the first chapters. This will be updated as I read along. Chapter 1, the chapter on classes, opens with an absolutely jaw-dropping portrait of a blonde tiefling Commander cleric. The new classes are the Chaos Mage, Commander, Druid...

13 True Ways and 13th Age Bestiary releases incoming!

PDFs PDFs PDFs! 13 True Ways is UP. Try not to crash the server in your rush to download it! First impressions: the pages look gorgeous. They actually look better than the core book! Apparently the art budget was larger this time. From Rob Heinsoo's introduction, here is what is in the book...

Gnomes! (HUH) What are they good for? Absolutely nothing!

A Theory of Gnome Evolution So I've been re-reading this thread with, I'll be honest, a great deal of amusement. The truth is that I find the gnome to be inherently ridiculous. I"m not saying that he truly is ridiculous, but that's how I automatically perceive him, and judging by this thread...

D&D 5E (2014) Are we banking too much on the DMG?

Right, this is what I'm talking about. And I think people have different ideas in their head about what 'modular' means. You might think that that means I can swap out whole sections of the rules, like combat or healing. But what WotC seems to mean by it is more that you can take those rules...

13 True Ways and 13th Age Bestiary releases incoming!

Alright, since I couldn't decide if I meant immanent or eminent I just decided to go with another word entirely. That said, I'm sure that the eminent 13 True Ways will be an immanent experience!

13 True Ways and 13th Age Bestiary releases incoming!

13th Age designer Rob Heinsoo writes on his blog that they are sending PDFs of 13 True Ways, the first big expansion book for 13A, to Kickstarter backers now. They have also received a shipment of Bestiary books. I've heard rumors that PDFs for both will be generally available on June 30th. It...

D&D 5E (2014) Are we banking too much on the DMG?

I feel like the supposed rules modules have given 5e a bit of a pass so far from a lot of people. When something someone really wants isn't in the rules, there's always, "Oh, maybe it will be in a module!" This way, 5e can be the perfect game everybody imagines in their heads... up until the day...

Anybody know when the Bestiary will be out in hard copy?

It's a small indie press with limited funds and manpower. They aren't going to be able to move as quickly as a big publisher! Personally the delay has only increased my appetite for new material. I'll buy anything they print at this point. Shut up and take my money!

Science Fiction in Your Fantasy Game?

Cool topic! I am very interested in using sci-fi concepts and tropes in fantasy worlds. I'm not talking about the TRAPPINGS of sci-fi: a laser gun does not science fiction make. I think Dark Sun actually whet my appetite with its psionics. Then I actually realized that I had been...

    D&D 4E The 4E Rakshasa...a little plain?

4e doesn't focus much on vulnerabilities, at least not of this type. You will see vulnerabilities to certain damage types, but this usually simply takes the form off a +5 or +10 damage on a hit. You certainly won't see anything along the lines of insta-kill crossbow hits, except for minions...

    Beast-Riders

I think Evilhalfling is right: the ranger's animal companion talent shows the way. It's a powerful ability, so it should take up two talent slots. The steed's extra abilities should be strictly defined as to when in the turn they happen. I think the real trick is how you would represent a...

    The Power of Prayer

This is a very interesting scenario. Is it based on something from one of your games, or is it strictly hypothetical? So, the thing about D&D specifically that makes this scenario weird is that 'faith' has a mechanical component (sometimes! not always). There are specific classes that use faith...
