Bards thoughout the ages (what is a bard)?

I've never been a bard fan for exactly the reasons you describe. The class has always felt like a mish-mash of things that other classes do better. The one iteration of the bard that I've been intrigued by is the 13th Age version, which has very nice unique mechanics for bardic songs and battle...

Thoughts on Miss Damage and Escalation Dice for all

Yeah it would have to scale with level. And a +6 IS brutal, but that's the point here right? The lesson for the PCs is: don't let this fight go seven rounds!

Thoughts on Miss Damage and Escalation Dice for all

What if: rather than the Escalation Die increasing the probability of monsters hitting, it increased the amount of damage they did? You want a gritty game? How about attacks that get nastier as the battle goes on?

Cost of D&D Editions, then and now

Wow, I knew that the original D&D books were considered pricey at the time but I had no idea they topped out at over $100 adjusted for inflation! Anyway, as far as the new PHB goes, I'm with those who are concerned that sticker shock will discourage impulse buys. Yes, starter set, etc., etc...

    Community

My friends and I get together to watch every week. We were like, "Holy crap, they're doing a dystopian future episode!!!" I love how Community can take random things and turn them into homages to all things geeky.

The mysterious founder of Bitcoin unmasked

Yeah but he basically flatly contradicts the statements he supposedly gave to Newsweek. This story just keeps on getting weirder and weirder...

13th Age explained for 3e/Pathfinder fans

Well HP is just a number. I believe it is possible for a tough monster that rolls a crit to kill a 1st level PC in one hit. PCs are by no means walking tanks. To address your overall point, though, no this isn't the kind of gritty, grim and unforgiving game you may be after. But that's okay...

    Icon relationship dice

I think you can certainly use the system sans Icon Relationships. The only thing you need to watch out for is PCs that have talents that allow them to get extra Icon dice. You don't want those talents to suddenly become useless. Either ask the players to select different talents or modify the...

    The D&D haiku thread

We need some poetry up in this joint, ya'll. Haikus are the best. 5-7-5 syllables, and they don't even have to rhyme! Here are a few of mine: Oh, nine alignments Sacred grid of fruitful roleplay! My PC? CN. My elf wizard still Remembers that book he read That's not D&D I love Dragonlance...

    Heinsoo on Alignment & Rebranding

Too late! :) As you say, this is an off-the-cuff tweet of 140 chars, it's best not to read too much into it. I think the main takeaway is that the devs didn't realize how important the nine alignments were to the community when they changed it. WHY did they change it? My (rusty) memory is that...

    will 4.0 succeed?

Better late than never! :p I think in any reasonably complex game system there are going to be some things the devs just don't get right. I'd rather that they have the option to take a mulligan than be forever locked into a ruleset that has issues. For instance, the second batch of 4e monsters...

The mysterious founder of Bitcoin unmasked
