    Heinsoo on Alignment & Rebranding

I think their mistake was not coming up with a cool visual representation of the new alignment system, a la the iconic 3x3 grid. If they had made an Alignment Pyramid or an Alignment Wheel people would have gone bonkers for it.

    D&D 5E (2014) What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Fifty smackers will net you the 13th Age Core Rule Book, which has everything you need to create a character, the rules of the game, a bestiary, a setting overview and a sample adventure. At $50.00, I expect the 5e PHB to deliver similar value.

13th Age explained for 3e/Pathfinder fans

One of the two designers of 13th Age is Jonathan Tweet, lead designer on 3E. Jonathan recently posted an essay on his blog explaining 13th Age for 3E/PF players: If you're a 3E/PF player who is curious about 13th Age, read on.

    Is the paladin underpowered?

I think the discussion here is focused on combat versus general role-playing. Obviously there are few limits on what you can do in terms of RP. The Paladin in 13A doesn't stray far from its D&D roots. Its combat options are just a little basic compared to some of the other classes in the game.

D&D 5E (2014) Do we really need so many classes with Extra Attack?

The ranger did offer 'extra attacks'. Well, one. It offered one extra attack. Some of the two weapon fighter builds did the same thing, I believe. But note that these extra attacks didn't increase over time. A 30th level Ranger with dual strike still had two attacks, just like a 1st level...

D&D 5E (2014) Do we really need so many classes with Extra Attack?

Yeah, I didn't say 'multiple attack rolls'. I said 'extra attacks'. Those are very different things.

How to manage all the conditions and effects?

You can of course use the same condition markers you used with 4e, but in my opinion you will need them less often. There are fewer situations in 13A where status effects and conditions get applied. Monsters are simpler. PC powers are more straightforward. You can also make do with fewer...

How different are Fighters from common soldiers/warriors?

Historically speaking, they are no different. In chainmail a 'fighting man' was a soldier in your army. The fighting man was ported over pretty much as-written to oD&D, albeit with hit points instead of hits.

D&D 5E (2014) Do we really need so many classes with Extra Attack?

I think Extra Attacks are way too unbalancing. They screw up the game's action economy. 4e did a pretty good job steering clear of them. 5e should do so as well.

What are your fav monsters to pit against players in DnD?

My faves are the monsters that do crazy stuff, like remove the PC from the battlemat (if they've been swallowed/dragged underground), throw the PC, or use a PC as a weapon against other PCs. Anything that makes the players sit up and take note.

D&D 4E What 4E books had later printings that were errata'd?

Sadly, I'm fairly sure that none of the reprintings reflect the copious errata that was applied to 4e. As the poster above said, it appears that in WotC's eyes the Essentials books served this purpose (even though they divided the rules up quite differently from the original core books). It's...

    The d12 Damage Die

I vote talent over feat. In 13A feats tend to be situational or limited. If this is a feat, it will be so obviously superior to other feats that it will become a must-take and basically turn into a feat tax. For talents, bear in mind that some weapon users get to take more talents as they level...

    13th Age Play Impressions/Reports/Thoughts

I agree that 'dailies' are miss-named. Your lack of daily recoveries is really on your DM, though. Basically the rule in 13th Age is that a 'full heal-up' (which includes recharging all dailies) occurs after no more than four combats, but the DM may decide that it happens sooner. The DM may...

    Immersion/Being in character

For me, the only way to stay in character in the game is through Method Acting. In other words, I stay in character as my halfling rogue 100% of the time. I ask people who want to talk to me to stand on chairs so I will feel shorter. I filch office supplies when no one is looking. Backstabbing...

D&D 5E (2014) Pew Pew magic......AHHHHHHH! Make martials all day swingers and casters limited per day slingers.

Manbearcat - You forgot a couple! - Rust monsters would only destroy non-metallic weapons and equipment. - 'Blind' status would only apply to unsighted creatures.

D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e reflect the designers' point of view?

I know, right? This is of course the classic dilemma for game designers. Wait! You just said the designers have to 'build on' what came before. So they're ADDING something new? Who decides what gets added? Isn't the 'something new' going to have to be the designer's vision? I...

D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e reflect the designers' point of view?

I think people would agree that usually game designers should make the game they would want to play. But I have seen several recent threads where people have argued that this does NOT apply to the new edition of D&D. They say that D&D designers have a responsibility to the community. This...

Legends & Lore: The Sorcerer class

I'm sure there will be mechanical differences, but this is sounding A LOT like the sorcerer from 13th Age.

    D&D 4E 4e/13thA immersion question and 5e/13thA DoaM question

*shrug* I don't have to focus or visualize or practice or anything. It just happens naturally. Everyone's experience of the game is subjective. The things that make it 'immersive' will vary by the individual. It sounds to me like you are suffering a bit from 'analysis paralysis' and might be...

    D&D 5E (2014) My happiness or yours.

THIS. 4e marked probably the first time in D&D history where the previous edition continued to be supported and expanded while it was in release. Most folks who didn't enjoy the direction 4e took quickly realized that Pathfinder was just 3.75 and quickly moved on to it. But apparently... not...
