Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

The last time we had this discussion, I thought it might be better to just release this into products that could be in the DM's Guild. I say that because I don't think WotC will really do the world justice. And then when fans of classic Dark Sun complain, it will be their fault. I would say it's...

What Lost, Abandoned or Short Lived TTRPG would you like to see get a re-issue and new support?

Just going to play this year. I plan to get back on the horse to run something next year. I have a bunch of friends who are going there who are running events, though. I've play-tested them and they're going to be AMAZING. I will think about running Talisman, though. I was planning Fabula...

D&D 5E (2024) Fireball Vs Chromatic Orb Late Tier 2 Thoughts.

Fireball discussions always make me laugh. In a campaign I'm playing in that's 15th level, I have a bladesinger Wizard. I didn't have fireball until the party chipped in and bought me a scroll because it "wasn't right." I've never cast it. Now in the game I'm currently playing, we just hit 11th...

What Lost, Abandoned or Short Lived TTRPG would you like to see get a re-issue and new support?

I picked it up two years ago at Gamehole Con. I have a friend who I go with and we always get a game to run a one-shot of during the next year. I genuinely liked the system and we had fun with it. I think the issue was that there wasn't enough: lore, character options and all that. But it had...

Pathfinder 2E I played my first PF2e game this week. Here's why I'm less inclined to play again.

I'll say it was a big letdown on the GM's part. Whatever the scenario was about, that's what you are investigating, and then you get to use your cool power to roll a D20 and hold it. I've played in a bunch of PF Society games and that's pretty much how the GMs run it. Now other issues? Maybe...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I think this is the key. There are a lot of folks who don't like clickbait, and attack it whenever they can. But do any of them have successful YouTube channels to the point where that's their career? No. They don't. I don't like clickbait content, and in fact have no time for it at all. But if...

What Lost, Abandoned or Short Lived TTRPG would you like to see get a re-issue and new support?

I had a friend who tried really hard to buy the rights a long time ago and he could not even get the author to reply.

    Legend in Mist general [+]

This is a fantastic looking game. I backed the PDF only, and I'm sort of regretting that because I think the game would be gorgeous in print. You can take a look at the "learn to play" comic book that's available for free (it's available at DriveThru RPG) and you'll see what it looks like. Now...

Tips and Tricks to Running a Con Game

As I’m reading this thread, one thought that came to mind is to make sure you’re ready to narrate and transition between scenes. If the party is sticking to something and isn’t moving along, you’re well within your authority to move them. I find it especially important to do this when you have...

Have You Used The X Card Or Seen It Used In Person?

I have run a lot of sessions at Cons and played dozens (actually hundreds, ugh, old person...) more and I've never seen it. I've seen it discussed a lot online. After Covid, I was going to get back to running some Con games and I thought about it, because I have heard it discussed a lot. I...

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

It is one of the games I'm pitching to my online group. We did a mini-campaign of Daggerheart with the playtest and decided it wasn't for that group, but perhaps Draw Steel may be. Why are we doing it? Our main campaign is 5E and the group really isn't feeling it, and hasn't for a long time...

    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

This takes me back many years (to the 90s ... man I'm old) I used to go to a bar where there was a guy who would do tarot readings for beer money. We used to go there once a week, and became friends. He introduced us to a game he just called Tarot, and said was originally from France. We'd play...

What's the bare minimum for a VTT?

There is a reason that Dice So Nice is the most popular Foundry module ever. I don't know that I could play without my custom black and silver Corwin of Amber dice. That's a very different feeling from 3D terrain and minis, which are really hard to execute well.

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

It's funny that you mention it, but I've heard of Heroes and Hardships. Didn't back it, but I do hear about a lot of RPGs. You can never say never, but the "universal" lane is pretty empty at the moment. Now my favorite game system of all time is the Hero system, so I do enjoy universal games...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Right! The only new game out there that I see trying to be all things is ... D&D. It has been a long time since I've seen a game that tried to be universal or didn't have a very specific play style in mind. The only question is how successful they are at getting where they intend to go.

What's the bare minimum for a VTT?

For me the bare minimum is something that I'm just not going to use. I play via VTT a lot, and I want it to handle the things that are difficult because we're not in the same spot. So that's a map and tokens, yes, but so much more. I play a 5E game every week and the fact that you can roll the...

Joyful GMing: Read Tolkien to Enhance Your GMing Skills

I think this is a really good point. Tolkien is really about what the D&D rules focus on, so I'd avoid it. But I have been looking for a different kind of fantasy RPG since the end of the days of the White Box, and Tolkien is all about that. It really just depends on what you want to play.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Pretty much this. You've got a preference issue for players and the GM. Yes, you can play a game like Daggerheart with Maps, or something similar, but why should you if that's not what you want? I love the fact that the Foundry module handles character management and powers. Heck, it handles the...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

It does. The SRD doesn't include the Campaign Frames and any test content that's still in demo form. It also doesn't have the art, but the Foundry folks have done a good job of making it look good anyway. And I'd much rather run with a full module, but if I have to run over VTT, this will be...
