He's saying that the monk doesn't threaten BOTH areas unless he's fighting with both his natural weapons, and his Glaive. Which, Honestly, Makes a good deal of sense, if ya ask me.

Commune, Divination, and Locate Object all immediately come to mind. Locate object, though, requires that you know what the damn thing looks like, and that it is somewhat close by.

This same concept comes up with Monks using Reach weapons. It, however, is a lot simpler in that the monk will just kick you in the junk, no hands needed.

While not your Typical toe-to-toe fighter, try going all monk. Pick up Improved Toughness, Combat Reflexes, and Weapon Proficiency Glaive. With careful ability point expenditure, he should have a decently high AC, without worrying a bit about his equipment, and once he gets to take Improved...

Actually, I'll throw my hat into the "no noise, elemental lightning" camp. Actuallightning bolts are damn loud. Like, shake your house loud. There is nothing in the rules to indicate that the spell causes sonic vibrations anywhere even NEAR that level.

It makes the same sound as a billion volt bug zapper, set to "Guards cooking in their own juices."

It should be noted that this is an advantage of touch SPELLS. A druid could, for example, cast Poison, Produce Flame, and shapeshift into a bear. Unless I am mistaken, he would do the bears normal damage, the 1d6+5 from Produce flame, and then possible 1d10 con, if the save was failed.
