My druids usually deck their animal companions out in Mythral Full Plate. Just because they can. Add in the other major animal companion buff spells (greater magic fang, animal growth, barkskin) and I've never had a problem keeping little Fluffy alive.

Whenever I count out "damage dealt" I always attribute buff damage to the buffer, not the buffee. Which makes it amusing when hordes of goblins attack the group with energy aura up.

Out of curiosity, how is a character supposed to aid another in combat without attacking anyways? It's not like he can see you faking a lunge at him or anything. I consider it a poorly worded effect, and treat it as such. In my games, any attempt to affect an unwilling creature directly...

Just as a side note, A ship deck should not count as an immobile surface, ever. Unless we are talking ocean liners, that deck will be shifting pretty much all the time.
