Help me freak out my players!

Horror is all about 'feeling' and what the _players_ think. Have there be a ghost whose attacks on the PC's are non-lethal (some temporary con- or str-drain, paralysis, stunning etc.) which cannot be harmed by normal weapons (assuming the PC's do not have magical weapons yet at Lvls 1 and 2)...

Archmage, with a crossbow slung across his back

I voted sometimes. There's always those events where magic doesn't work or where magic would be a waste of time. Also, the crossbow is useful to shoot grappling hooks, as a decoy, and sometimes the mage 'dresses up' as though he is more of a rogue, so the enemy is unaware we have magical support....

We need your advice please :)

One side note on the issue of ppl owning the stuff electronically versus wanting the physical book. First off, the ppl who frequent these boards are a specific subset of players. They are also a small minority (although very vocal and among the most dedicated!) of the total amount of players...

    new recruits

Hmm... an analysis of why the ppl never came back may be helpful. You already state that they grew bored. Some things off the top of my head: First, an RPG is a very specific type of game. In my experience people fall in one of a few categories: they love it, they kinda like it, they don't get...

Hmm.... how about making Ptolus the capital of Riedra?

    Praemal?

Yeah, yeah, I know, we've barely scratched the surface of the Ptolus Tome, but reading about the broader world of Praemal begs this question: will there be a companion Tome: Praemal, detailing the wider world, including the southern continent, in a similar 670 page monster? I for one, would...

    What's your Ptolus number?

Number 573, reporting for duty... It now sits comfily on my desk at home, where I have to stay cuz we're remodeling the house and ppl are coming today to lay new carpet. Unfortunately no doodle. It is in very fine condition however, in a box, within another box and bubble wrapped. The corners...

    The glory of OD&D

Och, off course to each his (or her!) own. It's nice to see that a 'chance' meeting at GenCon can change someone's life forevermore..... ;)

Rappan Athuk Reloaded in the house...

Copies....? Looks like you have one too many ;) Care to share? By the time I decided I wanted to buy, they were already all gone from the source, and here in the Netherlands, theres few chances of any showing up in any store nearby...

Worst Value for Money RPG Purchase

The Wheel of Time d20 gamebook. I had hoped there would be new info on the world and some actually real cool insights, magic items etc. None of that. Flipped through it once and been gathering dust ever since. The Psionics Handbook since it got totally outdated by the XPH and I never managed to...

Dead Gods - As A Resource

Sniff sniff sniff.... I smell an adventure brewing... mining dead gods, a divine watchman trying to prevent the PC's... some of the maps have already been provided... so what's next on the agenda...

Amazon.com no more for game purchases: Hypothetical...

Well, its very simple. I do not have a FLGS anywhere near where I live, so it's on-line or no deal. Amazon is best, but Paizo will do as well. For Ptolus I made a special exception to order it at WW, but I severly dislike having my credit card info lying around in too many stores. If I had to...

    D&D 3.x Here's What I Wish I Could Fix About 3E/4E

First of all, IMHO, 2nd Edition was simpler, I am speaking about the core rulebooks only here. DnD3E is a very well designed, integrated set of rules. The problem with this, is that it is difficult to 'tear' it apart if you do not know what you are doing. In terms of page count, density of words...

    D&D 3.x Here's What I Wish I Could Fix About 3E/4E

The issue is (IMHO) not the presence or absence of packages and such, bet more the overwhelming amount of info. A real noob would not know where to start, which options to leave out etc. It all still depends upon _someone_ knowing the game well enough to make informed decisions. To truly grow...

    Reason for Fantasy Biodiversity

Well, yeah, in my worlds, usually a mix of Spiral's, added with a mix of races created or mutated by powerful (non-divine) beings (usually the 'mad mage (tm)' type). Furthermore, on the issue of sentient races competing for living space and exterminating eachother, first of all, there is no...

    Anyone Remember...

Well, I agree somewhat with the sentiment, in the sense that, personally, I like my games simpler, but then again, that is the wonder of options. As a DM I can _deny_ them... 3.X won't kill the game... maybe 4.0 will!.... I think that similar to the topic of a profusion of rules for 3.X...
