    "Tomes"? (Products, not in-game items)

Yes. According to the TSR Archive (http://home.flash.net/~brenfrow/index.htm) website, there were three 'Tomes'. Item 1145: Rod of Seven Parts, item 1162: Return to the Tomb of Horrors and item 11347: Axe of the Dwarvish Lords. The first two were released in Boxed Set format, the Axe as a...

    D&D 4E Is there a shift toward 4E in the community ?

Definately not. I have so much 3.X stuff, it'll last me a lifetime. I think this is true for most ppl. also, it is now much easier to get both third party stuff and to get secondhand stuff nowadays, so the availability is not likely to dry up any time soon, so new players can get ahold of old...

Do You Have Too Many Books?

Meh... moving is not an obstacle. That's what you pay the moving company for... Anyhoo, since I kinda collect, I never have too many books. Still, I have prolly about 150 books and modules I never actually completely read but only skimmed. The desire to get ever more is that gnawing feeling...

    Am I dead yet ?

I do not quite see the problem. As a PC, you could even go suicidal (in a heroic way), or have the PC be recalled by outside forces (his king, his family whatever). The most important thing to remember is rule zero. DnD is played to have fun. If for some reason this particular player is no...

    The all mighty box text

I think the _concept_ of box text can be helpful: a quick summary, some notable quotes to give an NPC 'character' etc. In reality, the tool is often 'misused', or fails to function properly.

    Choices and railroads

The real issue of railroading is when the players (or PC's) essentially have no real choice. So, it kinda depends upon the nature of both choices. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with one choice being somewhat 'preferent'. An example would be two choices where one leads to the...

    Help with Campaign warfare

Check out the Tome of Battle. It has all manner of rules on this and many other issues that will come up when you play a military campaign... Edit: I meant Heroes of Battle.... sorry 'bout that....

    Player Commandments

Thou shalt have respect for the fact that the DM puts in a multiple of effort (in time and usually also money) into the game, and act accordingly

    Player Commandments

Thou mayest bring refreshments and nourishment to the table, but thou shalt not make a pig's sty out of the DM's home P.S.: thou mayest attempt to bribe the DM with aforementioned refreshments and nourishment, but may not expect results therefrom... Thou shalt not cheat, neither on die-rolls...

Help fill my haunted house with cool encounters.

The haunted house will also be a good place to teach the PC's that not all encounters can be won. You could place a powerful spirit wich can do little killing damage, but is nigh impossible to destroy. It is however bound to a room, or the fountain or somesuch, so it cannot follow the PC's if...

A good source for world building advice?

For names, just take out ye regular atlas. Look at real world place names, especially British ones. Good stuff there. With the best of intentions, it is usually more difficult to come up with better sounding 'weird, fantasy sounding names' than already exist in the real world...

A good source for world building advice?

I do not have them myself, but one could take a look at the whole world builder series from Troll Lord by Gary Gygax himself. Dunno how useful they are, but asking around, checking out reviews may be a good idea. The old World Builder book is nice, also take a look at the Campaign and Catacomb...

Why would you want to play *that*??

hrmpfh.... even though I am 'old skool' myself, and do not feel a great need to play wicked combo's of multiple PrC's, there are some things which rile me somewhat in the OP. first of all, although I am certain that a (large? maybe..) part of the players playing 'phat lewt' combo's do so purely...

RPGs & the Armed Forces - a liability?

I do not believe there is anything inherent in RPG's that would signify or result in any unreliabilty or whatever. The only thing that I can think of is that an overimaginative (or whatever) mind is not wanted on the battlefield, and maybe overimaginative minds are more likely than the 'average...

What did we do before feats, skills, and prestige classes?

I totally agree that the original idea behind the PrC concept is nice. Already back in the 1st edition era, we houseruled that clerics worshipping specific deities received deity-related powers and drawbacks.

    Stumbling out the gate

Well... in a pbem game some time ago, we were playing two teams, evil PC's against good PC's. I was among the evil PC's. We scryed the good group and thought we could get the drop on them as an opening move. We decided to set an ambush, teleporting in as two teams, attacking from various sides...
