The shortbow - what is it good for?

You could do this, but there should probably be more of a damage difference to make it more appealing; perhaps a d10 or at least 2d4 for a better average? Maybe a crit range of 19-20?

The shortbow - what is it good for?

Happy Holidays Everyone! I'll start by saying that I am not an expert on the longbow, but I will tell you what few things I did find out and what we did with it. Summary: It was not real easy to use (not even a fighter could just pick one up and use it), it made movement difficult, it...

    Starting at level 0

All of my players start with 0 level characters. and I move the experience table up one level so they need 1000 to reach 1st. The rules are easy, but too much for my lazy backside to type out, so I'll just give you some ideas. Understand that we assume that the characters have some small notion...

More damaging bows and crossbows unbalanced?

We looked at this a while back and made the following ajustments: 1.) Increased the threat range of both crossbows and the shortbow by 1. Logic was "yes, they have the potential to be quite deadly, but we did not want to completely out distance all other weapons in base damage. Results were that...

    changing the healing spells

Why don't you make it simpler rather than just a different complexity? Why does everything have to be a random roll? How about: CLW heals 5 hps per level (max 15) CMW heals 5 hps per level (max 25) CSW heals 5 hps per level (max 35) CCW heals 5 hps per level (max 55) Yes there is an...

    Replacing Brew Potion

It started with Arcana Unearthed and it opened a whole new world for us. We created small glass rods that when snapped in half imparted Invisibility. Brittle clay "grenades" that released the spell glitterdust, etc. Lots of options, lots of flavor. We even created items that had a slightly...

    PENALTY FOR DEATH.....ow that hurts

If I read the "question" right it is about new characters coming in, not raising them from the dead. In our games any new characters came in at the level (and experience point total) of the lowest level character. If they were all the same level they came in at that level but with no experience...

Looking for save or die variants

Similar here; drops you to -1, 2d6 temporary Con damage, and one negative level until restored. Effectively takes them out of combat if things are busy. If someone does raise them above 0 hit points, they are still woozy from the other effects. Players cannot complaign too much either because it...

    A different kind of healing

I believe it is implied that these spells would NOT cure lethal and non-lethal damage. You have to "forget" what you know about existing spells; he is reinventing them. It is not so much actually curing as it is reducing the severity and allowing you to heal quicker naturally. In other words the...

A(nother) Non-Vancian Spellcasting System: The Fatigue System

Well, this thread may be dead, but I thought I would let you know how the method I mentioned previously worked for higher level characters (levels 10 - 15). All-in-all it worked fairly well. The casters would start with their higher level spell, but then kick down to lower ones to avoid...

    A different kind of healing

I believe Arcana Unearthed has healing spells similar to this except that the caster takes on the non-lethal damage. You may wish to consider keeping the dice types the same throughout (i.e. either all d4, d6 or d8) to prevent any possibility of confusion. Currently I am trying to reduce...

What are YOUR house rules for raising a dead character?

In short the one being raised pays the EXP cost of the spell and carries a non-removable negative level for the remainder of their current level and the one following unless they make a fortitude save in which case the negative level only remains until they reach their next level. Saves are 25...

A(nother) Non-Vancian Spellcasting System: The Fatigue System

You don't have to wait, you just have an increased chance of moving to exhausted and then on to out cold and only if you are trying to throw nothing but 7 - 9th level spells. Of course the wait is only if you fail the check. Also I made a mistake above. I stated Con check instead of Fort save...

A(nother) Non-Vancian Spellcasting System: The Fatigue System

Over the years we have been trying to find a more simplified way of handling spells, and we have never been 100% happy. We just started trying this next method, and after one session we have not yet encountered any problems. Basically, whenever you cast a spell you make a Con check against a DC...

    Of Hit Points and Constitution

Our group played around with this a bit. I will tell you what we tried an where we are now and why. It might be a little long... 1.) Starting hp were (and still are) equal to your Con ability score. So if your CON is 14, your starting hit points are 14. At second level you received max hps, so...

    Cure Spells Outdated?

Starting with 3.0 I just house ruled that cure spells were "at max" when not in combat (i.e. resting or camping), and functioned normally in combat (i.e. had to roll). With 3.5 I just made them set amounts period (i.e. cure light = 15, cure mod = 25, cure serious = 40, cure critical = 50). Been...

    Predict this encounter

I have to side with the DM here. Whether I am a player or a DM, I hate, absolutely HATE it when players bog down the game with useless and unnecessary delay. Encounters are almost ALWAYS easier than some players make them out to be. It should have taken all of 5 minutes, real time, to figure out...

    Predict this encounter

I'm asking because that was the set up at the beginning of our last game session. I'm curious what others would expect/figure as the outcome. Since you are asking I would assume it did not come out as expected, perhaps even the TPK you mentioned?

    Predict this encounter

This idea is even better if the giant is not too far and does not have any missile capability.

    Predict this encounter

If they drop the shelter and the fighter types attack the one that is close by while the sorc delays the one at range with spells, they should be able to survive with minor to moderate injuries which the paladin should be able to handle. Are you asking this because the party is afraid to come out?
